My daughter is planning her wedding and would LOVE to have it at the Rutgers Gardens. I am looking for someone who has been to a wedding there and can tell me about it. Photos would be great too.
do you plan on having the reception there as well? A friend had one there last year and my wife was in the wedding party (matron of honor), she said it was very difficult to move around with heels. It got very chilly after the sun went down so if you are planning the reception there please tell your female guest to bring something to cover up just in case. Dont forget its a public place so you may just get some onlookers and random groups of people walking around your ceremony.
I'm sure it would be lovely at the gardens. I was in a wedding at Kirkpatrick Chapel on the College Ave campus and it was beautiful. It was pouring rain, but it was still beautiful. The pictures came out awesome (the rain held up for that part!)
The one thing with Kirkpatrick, and it's probably the same for the Gardens, is it is truly do-it-yourself rental. They sent a guy to open the doors for us and he did stay to lock it back up, but that is it.
I think you have to rent the Log Cabin to use the Gardens for a wedding ceremony. It looks nice but very rustic.
Yes that what our friends had to do. The bathrooms are located in the cabin. They bathrooms are small and plain. The ceremony happend in front of the cabin and they had the recpetion in the alumni pavilion. I cant remember is bugs were an issue.

Yeah, I'm not sure I dig that cabin so much for a wedding, although I love the gardens. It's just a little too rustic for my taste. It's a shame they make you rent the cabin to use the gardens, and then you have to use their caterer too.
To the OP, did your daughter go to Cook? Is that why she is set on the Gardens? I would recommend Kirkpatrick Chapel if she wants a Rutgers wedding (if she feels an attachment to College Ave campus, some Cook alumni don't), and then you could just have the reception at a regular hotel afterwards.
I got married at Rutgers Gardens in May 1994. At the time, I was told that almost no one actually got married there on the lawn (although it was a popular destination for photos). They didn't provide any services, nor did I request any.
As a Cook College graduate that same weekend, with no car and a shoestring budget, it was appealing to me on many levels. We had a civic ceremony so an outdoor wedding was desired. We took all of the photographs there on the spot. I was extremely lucky that it was a sunny (almost hot!) day in May.
Somehow, I was allowed to "rent" the lawn without the cabin (the reception/catering was held afterwards at the Elk's Club in downtown New Brunswick). It was a very nominal charge to use the lawn.
My regrets for the venue were that we didn't provide chairs (probably should have rented some for older people, but the ceremony was literally only 10 minutes), I didn't have beverages available (like I said, it was a hot day). I was lucky that my roommates from the Newell apartments on Cook Campus brought over sodas and lawn chairs in their cars! Also, an earlier in the day wedding would have been better because a lot of my pictures were overdeveloped because of how sunny is was (which would have been noticed now that there are digital cameras, lol).
I would only consider this option for a low-budget, rustic, family/casual style wedding with a non-bridezilla bride (I walked back from the restroom in my sneakers and wedding dress to check my hair).
The important thing is that it was a beautiful day with family and friends, and my husband and I are still happily married 15 years later.

OMG, I just checked the fee schedule to rent the cabin! It was required even 15 years ago that you had to rent the cabin to use the lawn (evergreens garden), but they must have felt sorry for me and never bothered to make me rent the cabin. But I didn't get the key to the bathroom either, lol!
On the left side go to corporate & private rentals.
It really is a very nice place.
Great recommendation! So gorgeous. I will say though, the catering prices are through the roof (at least to me). But so beautiful if you could afford it.
