Default Blue Law in Bergen County - Thoughts?

What do you think of the blue law that Bergen County has? All malls/shopping centers are closed on Sunday.

A blue law is a type of law, typically found in the U.S. designed to enforce religious standards, particularly the observance of Sunday as a day of worship or rest, and a restriction on Sunday shopping.

We, Bergen County residents (most of us, anyway) love it :-) All my friends and family know, you want to come over, Sunday is THE day.

I think it should be half day, until 2 or 4 pm.

I agree, we like it. It is a day for us to stay home and not feel guilty about not running around doing errands.

I am not sure I understand it really though.

You can go to Sears hardware and buy anything in the store on that day, yet in Wyckoff, at new S&S they have certain areas closed. B&N is open in Hackensack.

I live in Bergen County and I HATE the blue laws. This just makes the shopping area much more crowded on Saturday. And sometimes it's hard to get the shopping in on one day, especially since I work in the city late hours Mon-Fri.

Every other county which doesn't have the blue law manages to do fine on Sunday withouth this dreaded traffic jam that blue law supporters think will happen.

I read an article about how some Jewish people in Teaneck were complaining about this law since it's bias towards their rules where they can't shop on Saturdays.

tough luck to them.

Pretty much all of bergen county is a 15 minute drive to another county (whether its passaic, rockland, or essex) so its nothing more then a minor inconvience if you really have to go shopping

Wow I'm shocked so many Bergen county residents like this rule. Is it because your home is near a busy shopping area? If you don't live near shopping then what should it matter.

I like the blue laws, keep 'em. I can't remember the last time it inconvenienced me, if I'm really in a jam I go to Nanuet or Nyack in Rockland Cty, NY, but that's rare.

And it's different from Willowbrook because Paramus is a much more major retail center than Wayne. 5 malls plus many shopping centers as well as free-standing stores... It would be as jammed on a Sunday as it is on Saturdays. Paramus is the 2nd highest-revenue retail center in the nation, right after NY's 5th Ave, and right before Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive. And that's in spite of the Blue Laws.
