Default jersey shore to jersey city commute

I am a teacher in Jersey city looking to buy a townhouse or condo and love the shore. Any thoughts about where to buy at the shore and thoughts about the commute???

JC does not equal close to Jersey Shore. Prepare yourself for a 1HR + (minimum) to the point.
Just google maps the exact locations to determine distance. Any which way you slice it, if you live in JC - going to the shore will be an adventure.

Cool Ocean Port, Atlantic Highlands, Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach

How about the Ocean port, Atlantic Highlands, Monomouth Beach area? Its closer than the southern and central end of the jersey shore, and closer to Jersey City

I would suggest Atlantic Highlands and Monomouth Beach areas as Well As Sea Bright .

Seastreak Offers commuter service to and From Manhattan-Via Atlantic Highlands
SeaStreak > SeaStreak > Homepage

From there you could get PATH to Jersey City area
and local bus
Service - PATH - Port Authority of New York & New Jersey

would probably be better than driving in every day sanity wise

If you did drive you could drive 36 N to 35 N
to Perth/Amboy
get on 440 - Richmond PKWY -
to West Shore Expressway on Staten Island
440 N
to Staten Island Expressway 278 E to
440 N - WillowBrook Expressway
and exit at Kennedy Blvd in Bayonne

Take Kennedy Blvd in Bayonne to Jersey city

that would be the best route -

but I would suggest trying the Commuter boat to Manhattan route and then PATH/bus to jersey city

might be less stressful and more relaxing commute
you could get work done on the boat and I'm sure they might have wifi by now

Just a thought

I'd suggest northern Monmouth County. I do know someone who commutes to JC from Pt. Pleasant and, while they do it every day, that drive would get to me eventually if I had to do it on a daily basis.

If you have to be at work very early, though, you may not be caught up in as much traffic. I would second Dreamwork's whole post.

How far is your school from a PATH station? You could take the train to Newark Penn and PATH to JC. It takes me an hour from Long Branch to Newark by train.

Maybe rent at the shore first to see how you manage the commute.

I teach in Elizabeth and commute from Toms River. I realize Elizabeth is a diff. commute but to give you an idea - When I travel directly from my house to my school I leave at about 6 am (to avoid traffic and leave time for delays). I travel up the Parkway to the Turnpike and then take the Turnpike to exit 13. Most days I get into school by 7:15. This gives me time in the morning to prep and, if there's an accident I still make it in on time.

If I leave at 3:15 to return home, the traffic is not bad except Friday's in June. However, when I stay late (which is most days) I hit traffic below exit 105 and it usually adds an extra 20-30 minutes to an already long commute. Don't forget, gas, wear and tear on your car and tolls are an added expense for a longer commute.

So, if you really want to live at the shore, I suggest northern Monmouth County like everyone else has recommended.

I'll add one last thing. I love the shore. I live on the water. The commute is exhausting but, I still don't want to move because I like the lifestyle here. There are a lot of people who agree with me, but there are also a lot of people that simply can not do the commute much more than a year or two.

Seriously look into the water taxi to Manhattan - I'm sure they have commuter passes. and then you could get the PATH into Jersey City
and/or busses

Have you considered living on the beach on Staten Island? It would be a much shorter commute to Jersey City, although it isn't quite the beach like the Jersey Shore.

I wouldn't envy that commute at all... I could never do it.
An hour minimum is an understatement. I would think you are looking closer to 2 hours.
Logic would think Parkway to Route 3, or the Turnpike would be the most direct route... but the traffic would be torture, especially during nice months with heavy shore traffic.
I would invest in a good GPS that predicts traffic ahead and automatically reroutes you. And get some good books on tape.
