Your typically going to get 2 very different responses from this board. Either those that have drunk the koolaide and think Elizabeth is a wonderful opportunity with potential regardless of its current issues. Any you will get people who will tell you to stay away as if it was the plague.

My Opinion, I grew up there, I am there on a weekly basis (all over the city) but i no longer live there. When the thought of getting married and starting a family was finally close to being a reality for me, I jumped ship as fast as I could. I would still be there if I was single, but I would not want my child(ren) growing up there. Elizabeth was a very different animal when I was growing up. It was not "good" by anyones standards, but it was way better than it is now.

Portside is the new developments near the waterfront built on top of the old remains of one of the worst housing projects in the state (IMO). So, while the projects are gone, most of the people in the area are not. The area has cleaned up and is much better than it was but it is still not a "nice area". If you must move to Elizabeth, I would highly recomment to stay to the west/northwest side as much as possible. The closer to Linden/Roselle/Union you are the better.

I also agree with NJPat and Rob. I too grew up there. Sometimes when I fly back to visit I drive through the old neighborhood. Next to maybe Camden, Elizabeth is probably the armpit of America.

We stopped for a walk near the old park I remember as a boy. There is no English spoken anywhere. We walked around Broadway and Grand where all the stores are. The store keepers dont even want you in unless you speak their language.

I dont know about this Portside but Rob seems to be well familiar with it. Stay away.

A friend at work was telling me about how here mother moved from E'town after a drive-by shooting happened. I just told her that's progress. you know like a drive in window at a bank, you don't have to get out of the car, it's a convenience factor.

Now we all know Elizabeth at one time was the origin of all civilization. Everyone lived there or was from there at one point.

Some time ago, maybe almost a year ago, we had a regular poster on here who lived and worked in Elizabeth. He walked to and from work. One day he started a post on here saying he was mugged and had the pulp beaten outta him right on his own street. They took his wallet and watch.

He has not been around in a long time. Maybe some one remembers his name.

Well I'm so glad that other people are noticing what I've been saying for years, particularly about this once nice section that has declined greatly. Of course, if I say it, certain posters will be quick to call me "negative." But I'm not being negative, I'm being accurate. Elizabeth is on the decline. Period. End of story.
