Good places to hike with the dog in North Jersey? (Passaic: homes, construction) - City-Data Forum

I would be willing to drive to get there.

I prefer not to keep the dog on the leash so I would prefer a place that is not supercrowded.

If you mean homes with yards...I'm partial to my home county of Morris. It's easy to find great size yards for animals (there are ALOT out here) & tons of parks (not so sure but I think they have leash rules though) but like my town of Randolph they have a dog park & judging on how many folks have dogs out here I'm sure it's not uncommon. I know I'm baised but they do say "write what you know..."...lol

See hunterdon county website for a huge list of county parks most with no ammenities.

See also NJ state parks....... and NJ fish and game website for public hunting grounds that are deserted during the summer. You might get by having the dog off the leash legally in such areas. Try Clinton hunting grounds. More land than you can handle.

We go to Ramapo Reservation. Right now they are doing some construction though - where are you coming from?

I have been to Ramapo. Very nice (although it can be a little crowded on a nice day). Love hiking up to the upper lake and letting my dog take a swim.

If you like to go on a longer hiker, at Ramapo you can really go on for hours and hours, and some of it is very tough too. I can recommend some hikes if you'd like just tell me how long and how hard

We really enjoyed walking in a loop up the Appalachian Trail out route 80 right by PA (right before the bridge). There are maps there, but basically you can go up on one trail, up to a lake, and then come down on the Appalachian Trail. It is a pretty tough 5 or 7 miles.

We usually just take the dog off as soon as we're out of sight of most people. If we see people coming we'll put her back on. Once you start getting more than, say 15 minutes away from the parking lot it becomes one person every hour or so, depending on where and when.

State Line lookout off the Palisades, near the NY border, there are trails and they allow dogs. If you go during the week it's not crowded, but weekends are. They say dogs on leash but I have often seen people with dogs off the leash, when it's not crowded. I also saw someone get a ticket for dog off leash on a weekend. I also saw someone not pick up their dog's poop and a hiker in Marine desert fatigues picked it up in a bag, walked after the guy to give it to him and probably give him a hard time, then saw a ranger, and told the ranger, who gave the guy a ticket (or so it appeared, could have been a warning I suppose).

If you're courteous and your dog doesn't bother anyone on a weekday, and if you go into the trail and make sure to have the dog on a leash as you come out of the trail, you should be fine.
