Nothing bad about Mendham......
Beautiful area, great schools (some of the best schools in new jersey)
Great location, near the train, near morristown....
One of the more expensive areas

Best websites to research before buying a home

What about neighborhood feel? Homes seem far apart. How far is shopping?

we moved to mendham only a couple of months ago, but so far we are absolutely loving it. yes, the homes are generally spaced further apart, but that (at least for us) was a major plus point. we were living in basking ridge before, and had already made a lot of friends in the mendham/chester/far hills/peapack area, so it was actually easier to see most of them after the move. that said, i can imagine it might be tricky if you were moving here from totally out of area, and starting afresh. i havent read your previous posts, so dont know where you are moving from, or your personal circumstances, but if you have young kids (as we do), meeting other people in similar circumstances to you is more or less guaranteed, through kids classes/activities and the like.

i dont have to commute into NYC (thankfully!) so for us, mendham is really quite perfect...an almost rural gem where we get peace and quiet, a safe (and generally friendly) neighbourhood, from which you can easily get into NYC (we drove in in 40 mins on saturday) with great schools, and a fair few good restaurants around.

24 hour shopping, no. a constant stream of cabs, no. huge shopping malls, no.

but thats all part of the appeal.

we moved to the US from the UK a couple of years ago, and this area reminds me of what england was like some 50 or more years ago...and i mean that in the best possible way.

the major down side? the usual NJ curse of silly property prices, and even sillier property taxes.

I agree with these statements 100%. Mendham is a nice little quiet town that allows you to be close to the action if desired but just far enough not to hear and see most of it. If this is what you are looking for, you will love it hear. Just get ready to pay the price for this seclusion. Here is a link to their town website. It will also give you some info on the town and where things are:

Mendham Borough - Mendham Borough

Also a nice little summary from Wikipedia:

Mendham Borough, New Jersey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Good luck with your home search!

If you're moving to mendham, you'll probably love it. I grew up in Mendham, and most of the time me and my friends were very, very bored. We were lucky enough though to live in one of the nicest and safest towns in New Jersey though and also attend some of the best schools in the state. There isn't much to do in town, most of your major shopping will have to be done out of town. It's very inconvenient because it takes 10 minutes just to get out of town; it's the country we have small, narrow, country roads. No major highways go through Mendham,, you have to go all the way out to Chester to get on 206, all the way up to Randolph to get on Route 10, and to get on 287 you need to go all the way over to Morristown or Bernardsville. It's always a drag going somewhere, but most people don't seem to mind.

I didn't mean to make Mendham sound bad though, it's a beautiful town and not a single family who moves here regrets it. We're a very welcoming community. It's a boring town but it's very safe and very beautiful. And honestly, when your married and you have kids, life isn't all that exciting in the first place . You might as well be safe, have your kids go to great schools, and live in a beautiful community. It's a good trade off. Mendham is also a very wealthy town, and when it comes to wealthy towns, people are usually worried about the snob factor. Most people in Mendham are nice though, even though I'm sure Mendham has some snobbish people. Everyone I knew growing up though came from very nice families, I didn't know anyone who was a snob.

And yes, the houses in Mendham township are usually spread out a little bit farther apart. They are built on large pieces of land along small country roads, which is part of the reason why growing up in Mendham Township is so boring. There are no sidewalks, so you would have to walk or bike on the side of the road, and that can be very dangerous for a kid or a teenager to be doing that. And also, they would probably have to walk a long distance to get to wherever they were going. That's why I always had to bug my parents for rides, they got pretty annoyed with me. Mendham Borough is different though, the houses are closer together and they have sidewalks. Mendham Township and Mendham Borough are two separate towns; different school districts, municipal offices, and police departments. We all go to the same high school though.

I hope all of this was helpful. Good luck

agree about the sidewalks...especially for a Brit like me, its very odd not being able to safely walk down most roads (that was one thing which actually favoured basking ridge over mendham). as for mendham being boring, i can totally understand a teenager or young adult thinking that, but then again, im also fairly sure such a person wouldn't target mendham as a location to live in the first place. you pay a premium for living in a pretty, safe, and wealthy area with good schools...if you want lots of nightlife and shopping and commerce, its fairly obvious mendham isnt the place to be. of course, boring in one person's book may translate as a GREAT place to raise kids in anothers...its all about perspective

i found this recently on facebook, of all places...no idea who wrote it, but i found it mildly amusing, and gives a bit of an insight into the place...(disclaimer: please read with a pinch of salt!)
