Even Edison couldn't invent a reason to stay in New Jersey
I believe NJ's fate is sealed. The mayor, the governor, the residents - whatever.
This is like watching a baseball game in the 8th innning when the score is 15-0.

"Cheaper" housing? Yeah...you can have it all. Along with our terribly high unemployment rate, piled on top of our lower-than average salaries.
But hey, there's always the beach and sunshine.

After working 3 years doing contract you can own a home paid in full in FL while up here you will be working for the rest of your life with insane taxes as decent homes are 400k plus ... kthx
and when you go on unemployment you won't get enough to cover the mortgage

Trade offs for everything. Toh-may-toe, ta-mah-toe.
Try it out. You might hate it...you might not. Something for everyone. It's not for me. If it's for you, then by all means.

Dollar rules everything, and when you don't have enough to live and pay the bills everything else is secondary.

I lived in FL for a year. NO THANK YOU. They have 4 seasons that roughly coincide with our great NJ seasons:
NJ Winter = FL Hot
NJ Spring = FL Hotter
NJ Summer = FL OMG I am on fire, someone put me out!
NJ Autumn = FL It is damn hot, but at least I am not on fire anymore
Don't get me wrong, I like the place, but not to live. When I was riding my motorcycle on Christmas day in a t-shirt and jean jacket, I knew it was not for me.
One of my friends is down there and he loves it, and he is a Jersey Boy, but def not for me.

Of course this degenerates to the NJ vs. FL debate. As always, I'll say what I always do - There are SOME people in SOME industries who do well in NJ. However, if you don't want to deal with the frustrations of working in NYC or aren't in certain industries, it's a bad place to live. And, it's getting worse as more and more businesses move out. For others, Florida isn't a good place to live because of their respective skillsets. That said, millions of people are able to live nice lives, live in nice homes and enjoy great weather year-round in Florida. I hope to be one of them in the next few years. I don't mind the heat, in fact I love it, and wearing a short sleeve shirt on Christmas day would be a great for me. I've lived in FL before and would love to move back.
THAT SAID... While New Jersey isn't a bad state to live in (nice seasons, nice towns, etc.) it's getting impossible financially to live here. And this is a great article that articulates the reasons why. The bottom line is that no young people are able to afford decent places to live and it takes either an inheritance or a 100K+ per year job to be able to live here. That's unsustainable in this economy. Property taxes are an outrage.
