you're right about that northern stretch of route 17 getting built up with retail (especially big box stores and chain restaurants) in recent years, but that commercial strip is mostly in ramsey, with a little bit in upper saddle river and mahwah as well. the only highway that passes through washington twp is the garden state parkway, and of course there's no commercial presence on that road other than the occasional gas station/rest stop convenience store.

within washington township itself, the only major commercial district i can think of is a strip mall on the east side of pascack road, just north of ridgewood road. this strip mall contains a supermarket and smaller stores and has been pretty busy the times i've driven by, but i highly doubt that it's a regional destination like the malls and big box stores on routes 17 and 4. it would be shocking to say the least if that one little strip mall were the primary source of washington's inflated crime rates in 2007.

like i suggested earlier, the high crime rate was probably a fluke thing. i'd love to find out the exact reason at some point, though.

^ I know, right? Washington Township!? O.o Huuh? I love Mike's maps all the time, but this is kind of hard to believe for once. What could possibly go wrong in Washington Township? =.=

Newark is "not as red" as people think, though it is on "orange alert".

Throw in "property tax crimes" and see how the numbers skew!

There is a zip called "Imlaystown" that reads zero. In reality, it's the only zip that had no applicable data.

i seem to remember a tragedy there a few years ago involving a family. my memory is a little hazy but i think a few people including teenaged boys were killed maybe by one of the parents? maybe the data used for this crime rate came from the year when this happened..does anyone else remember this? i could be wrong

I would assume these numbers are based on reported crime and I would think that even tho Greenville has more crime than pretty much everywhere else in JC the people who live there or people who are involved in the incidence are less likely to contact the police so therefore more crimes go unreported. But again this is my "assumption" so it is all a theory not based on actual fact just based on experience of the typical culture of bad neighborhoods.

There's NFW Allendale and Saddle River have more crime than Teaneck and definitely not Fairview. I know crime in Teaneck is low, but it's still way higher than in Allendale and Saddle River.

And Fairview? Different planet from the other three towns.
I don't know about bogus, but I do suspect that there are some real differences between towns in how crimes are categorized, reported, etc.

I'm from near that area, and Washington Township isn't on Rt. 17. I agree that's kind of odd. Maybe there was a murder or something?
