Default New Jersey cities population quiz

Thought I'd pass this along, very fun:

Can you name the most populated cities in the State of New Jersey? - sporcle

You have to type in the top 20 NJ cities by population. I will tell you I missed one of them, but won't say the name of the city, so as to ruin the flavor of the quiz.

That's very difficult. Especially considering most of the towns aren't real cities, so you wouldn't even think of most of them as being large (Brick, Hamilton, etc). I got 11.

i scored 15/20 if I spelled passaic right. Who would think Brick and Middletown make the top 20, especially over Irvington Paramus Hackensack. Hamilton Dover just didn't enter my mind under pressure. Gloucester is another tricky one because it includes a bunch of towns which u thought were independent! I went to h.s. there to! It's in camden county to, for the record.

Gloucester was the one I got wrong. I think it's an amalgamation of Blackwood, Glendora, and I am not sure, but perhaps Sicklerville and Turnersville as well (perhaps Sicklerville is in Washington Twp). I have no idea, when it comes to that area. It has always confused the hell out of me, there is a complete sense of discontinuity.

I think that was done by township, so, in reality, Dover was counted twice (Toms River was also mentioned). There is definitely some ambiguity in this list, and it highlights how differently NJ counts its population, relative to other states. Toms River is part of Dover Twp (someone correct me if I am wrong), hence, my observation about the double count.

i got 19/20. no way i would've gotten that many if we'd been required to list each city in order, or if random, incorrect guessing were penalized. but since those things didn't matter, i just kept typing in any big city or township i could think of, and got most of the 20 within the first minute and a half.

the one i missed was gloucester township; i totally forgot about that one. plus, south jersey usually isn't on my mind other than the innermost suburbs/small cities near philly (camden, cherry hill, moorestown, voorhees, marlton/evesham) or the shore communities (atlantic city, ocean city, wildwood, cape may).

yeah, the list shouldn't have contained both dover and toms river. the only reason i got both right was because i kept typing in random nj place names, as mentioned above.

but really, they're the same place. until 2006, toms river was a census-designated place within dover township. while the township was officially named dover, everyone and their grandmother called it "toms river."

to correct that problem, the township's residents voted to officially change the municipality's name to "toms river" in november 2006. so now the official name matches the longstanding colloquial one.

and now, the town of dover in morris county is the only remaining dover in the state.
