Ahh - you're a former New Yorker - that explains your attitude with New Jersey. I sort of thought that might be the case. New Yorkers generally just think that New Jersey is an extension of New York.

People actually thinking that NY and NJ are the same state is not the result of a lack of pride-more like an indictment of the U.S. educational system.
Sorry - but when you have many things that take place in New Jersey being marketed as New York - it does have an affect on people thinking that New Jersey is part of New York.

Quote:
How on earth can you compare Newark to NYC? That makes no sense at all. There is no way the NYC of 20 years ago was anything like Newark. That is just nuts. The people who don't remember what the old New York was like are obviously the people who never lived there. Crediting slogans and pride for the changes is like crediting santa claus or the tooth fairy.
How is this nuts? New York was crap during the 70's and 80's, Comparing Newark to New York - although New York is a much larger city is not a stretch - not when you are comparing conditions of a city - in that instance size doesn't matter. Newark is also a colonial city and the 3rd oldest in the country. There are a lot of great things happening in Newark and a lot of positive changes.

Quote:
NJ is not Indiana and people in NJ do have an identity. The state is unusual in many ways and being in the shadows of two large cities is part of that and has been since the beginning of time.
Being in the shadows of NY and Philadelphia diminishes our identity - how can you say that is part of our identity? New Jersey is increasingly just being considered a mere suburb of New York. Often times when flying into Newark Liberty International Airport - pilots will announce - welcome to New York. That waters down our identity - and people are confused when they see the Jersey Store in Terminal A and they don't sell any New York merchandise. I know the manager there and he often has to explain to people that they are in New Jersey - not New York. People think that New York and New Jersey are interchangeable - thus diminishing our identity.

I have had to get maps corrected - namely New Jersey Gazetteer and Google Maps where they both had New Jersey's border wrong - showing Liberty Island and Ellis Island on the NY side of the border - when they are both in New Jersey waters. Right now I am working at getting Google Earth corrected also.

Anyway - I'm hoping that some of this will change. NJ Travel and Tourism has just moved under the Secretary of State office from the Commerce Department and after talking to her - I feel that she gets it.

Not a stretch. LOL.
I am not a New Yorker...please
If you are really from NJ you would know that NYC people don't consider NJ an extension. You are kidding on that. Yes?

Sorry - yes - it's not a stretch. You really think New York back in the 70's and 80's was better than Newark is today? If you do then you really must have no idea what Newark is really like. In size and buildings - there is no city in the world that compares to New York - but in other aspects - it's easy to compare other cities to NY - including Newark.

Well you're the one that said you had lived there - thus you were a New Yorker at one time.

NO - I'm not kidding - they may ridicule New Jersey - but they consider it just a mere suburb of New York.

You can go to AboutNewJersey.com if you think I'm not a New Jerseyan.

The teams have all said they will not change their names.
I think while they're at it they should give one of the 'NY' teams(probably Jets)to NJ. I never understood why some cities needed more than 1 team to represent them when some States don't even have a team!

No offense to IN but quite frankly there's not much else going on in states like that so that's why things like sports are more important, kinda like PA

I work with Brooklynites every week, and we're constantly going back and forth about NYC/NJ (playful rivalry).
They like to say that the best part about NJ IS NYC, I say NYC couldn't be NYC without NJ.
-NJ identity is unquestionably marred (Newark Liberty is oftentimes referred to as a New York airport) Yeah I know the metro area and all that but I actually like how CNN (when reporting flight delays) groups NY and Newark separate.
-Jets/Giants been here awhile and I think it's safe to say that most of NJ is used to it. BUT the Red Bulls switch got to me. Sure it's been done before, but then I ask...NY'ers would never allow this...ever.

Agreed. I think these teams opt to use the 'NY' in their name for marketing advantages.
Oh man you guys wouldn't believe how many people in the service unfamiliar with our northeast zone think that NJ is one of the largest cities in NY

I would prefer that the Jets go back to New York. A lot of states don't have a team, but then again how much of a market will you find in central Idaho?

I grew up in Northeast NJ and never considered it a part of New York. They may be close by, but New York is a different state and thus distinct.
