I grew up in Northeast NJ and never considered it a part of New York. They may be close by, but New York is a different state and thus distinct.
Northeast NJ is definitely not part of NY, but with the many NY transplants and the influence of NYC the culture/economic lines are blended. North NJ is more the Greater New York area than it is North NJ. Although NY metro area is large, North NJ is so geographically small that it virtually gets completely swallowed up by it

The interesting thing is living 28 yrs of my life in Passaic County, I was adamant about making the distinction between NJ & NY. Now that I live in the Philly burbs, I tend to cling to the NY label more than I used to. I guess I just relate a hell of a lot more to NYC than Philly. STILL, I am from North Jersey first and foremost!

Markets? What about representation? Isn't that why alot of people are into the teams? Moms etc? I always thought that it was just a more 'grown up' version of school teams, every town had one to represent their school/town pride etc.

Default NJ Giants, NJ Jets & NJ Red Bulls

As a practically lifelong resident of New Jersey and a big-time sports fan, it has always driven me nuts that the Giants, Jets, and now Red Bulls refuse to acknowledge the state in which they play. I can understand them not using the city name, since East Rutherford is not exactly Chicago or Miami. But, c'mon, New Jersey is an actual state in the U.S. I think the rest of the country has heard of it! There is no need for these teams to have to pretend they play in New York. I don't care if the Giants & Jets did originate there. That was a long time ago! If they wanted to play in New York so bad, they could've picked somewhere else to play -- like in that actual state. It's pretty big, I'm sure they have room somewhere over there! As for the Red Bulls, they don't even have a history of playing there at all!

About a year or so ago, I remember reading how the MLS was considering the land around Rowan University for a pro soccer team. I don't know whatever happened with that, but if they do go through with it, it had better not have Philadelphia in its name. ... I wouldn't be surprised, though, seeing as how Jersey's fine state officials always seem to go along with whatever name these teams choose. ... Can anyone imagine New York officials or Pennsylvania officials rolling over and letting a pro sports team play in their states while using a New Jersey name? ... Not bloody likely!

What is funny about the story in this original thread is that it's about New York officials getting mad about another state's sports teams using the New York name.

The whole thing is backwards!

Instead of New York officials insisting that New Jersey teams use its own name, it should be NEW JERSEY officials insisting that its own teams use its own state's name: NEW JERSEY!

What a concept!
