Where to live for $950 or less close to NYC?
I am looking for a decent community to live in with a 45 min. or less commute to NY. I work in midtown and i prefer to take the train, i'm not sure what areas are the best for my price range or where to look for apartments in those areas. When I look at the transit cost it gets pretty expensive with a longer commute.

In that price range, you might be putting your safety in question, especially the closer you get to NYC. Central NJ is going to be tough but might be a little possible but once you get to Northern NJ you are going to be in bad areas. Your best bet would be to try Craigslist and keep an eye out there. You will probably often come across rooms for rent or basement apartments, which might not be a bad thing if this is okay with you; but like I said, Craigslist is the best and most efficent option to find something.

What type of apartment are you looking for? If you're willing to sublet a single room within an apartment and don't mind several roommates you could possibly find something near the Path train in Jersey City or Hoboken.

You can rent places in Hackensack and Riverdale for that amount... there's a train stop there as well for an easy commute into the city.

Actually its for myself and boyfriend, so it's hard to do the roommate option. We've been looking on craigslist and actually went to view some places in Bayonne and East Orange. Bayonne was nice but the apartment had evidence of bugs. We werent sure about East Orange but the apartment was nicer. Since were not familiar with the area were just hoping to hear about some unfamiliar towns.

plenty has been posted about EO on this forum, check archives
I'd suggest Jersey City, close to Journal Square path station, e.g. Jersey City Heights.
If you're looking in JC, avoid anything too far south of Journal Square (if it's south of JSQ and not a walk to the train, forget it)

You definitely don't want to live in East Orange. Bayonne is ok, I just hate the light rail - so slow, and you'll have to connect to the Path in JC to get into NYC.
