Default Water Softener - Buy or Rent?

Hi All!

Just bought our first home in Livingston, moved in Sunday. The water is very hard (according to the town website 13gpg hardness). We want to get some sort of softener to get rid of deposits on EVERY faucet in the house, rings in baths, and to prevent further corrosion in our appliances. Does anyone have any recommendations about buying vs. renting water softeners? What are the advantages/disadvantages? I have reps coming to the house on Friday to give me estimates- any questions I should ask them? Anyone have any companies they can recommend? I've contacted Culligan, Automatic Water Conditioning, and Bergen Water Softening.

Thanks for any help/advice!

Sarah

RENT, without a doubt. The fees are very reasonable and the equipment is theirs, so it gets fixed for free if there is a problem. Over teh long term you will pay more, but the peace of mind is worth it, in my opinion. I have had a whole house water softener in two of my houses and rented both. Never any issues and a true plug and play item, I send a $35 check or whatever every month, and I get clean, fresh water.

Hard water is much healthier to drink than soft water.
