Minister moving from Dallas to Wyckoff area.
Moving from Dallas to Wyckoff area. Where is a good place to live within a 30 minute drive of center of the city? 60 year old minister and spouse seek safe neighborhood with multi story apartment building or single / two family residence. Any bowling centers in the area? Any active senior recreation centers? It doesn't get below 45 degrees in the winter does it?

Wyckoff is more than 30 minutes from the center of NYC. Don't know of any multi-story or high-rise bldgs. but you should be able to find a garden apt. or 2-family home. Don't know what bowling alleys there are in that area, but there's one near me - Montvale Lanes - which would be about a 15-20-minute drive from Wyckoff; I'm sure there's one even closer to Wyckoff but I don't know what.
Not sure of senior rec centers, either, but there are many seniors in the area and there are activities through churches, etc. for them. And yes it gets way below 45 in winter, but by your winkie emoticon I take it that was a joke??? It gets well below freezing, into the teens at times, and last winter got below zero, but that's rare.

Below zero!!!
I lived in Iowa my first 28 years. NYC is north of there and has to be colder still. I have spent 32 years in the Dallas area. Yeah, the emoticon gave the correct impression. If nothing else, The TODAY SHOW is a good indicator of the cold weather there. I am looking into Fairlawn at the moment. Thanks for the reply! Your effort is appreciated.

Hi there!
For bowling, try this search result from Google.
As for options for living, couple of questions for you.
1) Why would you want to drive into New York City as opposed to taking the train?
2) Are you looking for more of an "association" style of living where most of the groundskeeping and maintenance are taken care of for you?
2a) Or would be interested in a home where things like shoveling snow and mowing the grass would be your responsibility?
3) How mobile are you and your wife in terms of moving around a home?
3a) Is a rancher better than a two-story home or apartment/condo?

There is a bowling place in Fair Lawn on Maple Ave called Brunswick Fair Lawn Lanes.

Fair Lawn would be a good choice. There are quite a few apartment complexes in the town, and the town is nice and safe, but more affordable than the really swanky towns like Wyckoff. Fair Lawn also has a good senior citizen center and a nice new community center with a lot of events, in addition to the bowling alley (which is one of the few left in this area).

In reference to the questions asked >
1) Why would you want to drive into New York City as opposed to taking the train? Didn't know there was a train. Sounds good so long as it isn't Pellham 123.
2) Are you looking for more of an "association" style of living where most of the groundskeeping and maintenance are taken care of for you?
The last snow I shoveled was in 1977. I would prefer to keep it that way.
2a) Or would be interested in a home where things like shoveling snow and mowing the grass would be your responsibility? I have been doing "Honey Dos" for 40 years now. I am ready to let someone else do the upkeep. Actually, I can mow the grass if on a smallish yard and instead of shoveling snow I would get a 5hp snow blower.
3) How mobile are you and your wife in terms of moving around a home?
No mobility problems at the moment but don't want to manage stairs because the old legs tire quickly.
3a) Is a rancher better than a two-story home or apartment/condo? Yes, definitely. I would really like a garage so I can tinker. I don't believe in condos. It just seems wrong for two people to own the same house.
Thanks for the kind replies folks.

Wyockoff is a OK, quite town.. but it's a little bit far away from NYC, isolated and boring to be honest.
Why not come closer? Try Fair Lawn, Paramus, River Edge, Oradell, Bergenfield, Ridgewood, Hackensack etc.
Winter's are cold in New Jersey, with temperatures ranging from 20 - 40 F, but could for few days be as high as 60s or be as low as 10s. Remember that Wyckoff is slightly colder and snowier than NYC, because of its higher elevation! So the closer to the city, the warmer and less snow

I'm assuming you mean 30 minutes from Wyckoff?
I would try Mahwah, there is a wide variety of housing, and it's right next to Wyckoff. They have a really nice senior center too, nice library. Also lots of parks if you like to walk, hike, ski etc.
As for bowling, there is a bowling alley (Holiday Bowl) in Oakland, which also borders Mahwah.
Oh no, it never get below 45 here! Just like it never goes above 85 in Texas
: )
Here's the town senior center
