Default East Brunswick gets a publicly funded Hebrew School

This totally blows my mind that this was approved.

Quote:
The state has approved New Jersey’s first publicly funded school with a mission of teaching Hebrew, according to a New Jersey Department of Education press release.

Hatikvah International Academy Charter School of East Brunswick won the green light Wednesday along with seven other charter school proposals.

The application submitted earlier this year ignited local controversy of the separation of church and state, especially among Jews. Two petitions circulated in the spring, with more than 100 area residents for or against, and signatures of Jews on both sides of the issue.

Critics claimed the application was a thinly veiled substitute for a local private Jewish school in town that teaches religion and charges up to $13,000 a year in tuition.

I am going to start a Catholic, I mean a Latin language charter school so elementary students can learn Latin.

It's really important for our global economy that students know Latin.

I bet that would get approved.

Mmm. The more I read about it, the more I got confused. When I think of all the languages that can assist in global trade and/or job skills needed...

I really have to wonder though - EAST BRUNSWICK HAS THE BEST SCHOOLS IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY. Why is a charter school needed?

Exactly. Why is a charter school needed in a town that has such good schools?

Why can't they just go to the public schools in town? As you said, the schools there are very good. Surely the Hebrew language can be studied after school or on the weekends, as many Jewish families do it. And if it's only a Hebrew language school, such a pursuit could be studied as an extracurricular. Or, they could even have petitioned to have Hebrew as a language elective within the public schools.

So why do they need this school? I wonder.

And these schools will be popping up all over NJ now that the precedent has been set.

There's no hate. None at all.

This is America. People are free to educate their children in private schools all they want. I just have a problem with taxpayer money funding it.

I don't blame the people starting this charter school. Good for them.

I blame the Department of Education for approving it.

RFOD = ?
google = Acronym Finder: RFoD stands for Royal Forest of Dean (UK)
or

c'mon -- what is RFOD?

Luckyshoes, I would add to your reputation, but I have to spread it around first
