Go visit the web site www.OffDutyPoliceOfficers.com
It's a private company that hires out active duty police officers in their OFF DUTY hours, for various security & protection jobs. Specifically listed there are Traffic Conttrol and Construction Site Security.
While this doesn't prove that all police officers at construction sites are off duty, it certainly does suggest that the normal procedure is to hire off duty officers.

you dont have to do any leg work, kate. all you have to do is say how you have come to determine this was a fact. did you go to a town meeting and hear a discussion? if so, give those details. did you read about it in an article? if so, those details.

its very simple kate.
Yes council meeting the issue was brought up by a resident when they were working on Rt 15 as our taxes like every one in the state is through the roof
Had I read an article I would have supplied a link but can't do that from a verbal inquiry at a council meeting.

thanks, people here seem to be making factual claims about something id like to know about. i just want to make sure there is some basis for their claims before i might go around repeating it to someone else.

did someone mention there was a requirement to have police at road construction sites or is it just optional for the contractor? i see value to using police rather than civlians. however, i also do believe that people follow directions when given by a regular civilian with a flag. im sure there are lots of jobs that it would be nice if you could keep a cop around for your safety. unfortunately, for most business that isnt possible. when government is the one paying, anything is possible.

too many people go around repeating stuff that other people claim to be facts only to find out they werent really facts. i understand its easier for people to just believe what you say is fact, but if people did that then they are idiots.

so it seems at least in some instances, the police are hired independently for road construction projects. ultimately, the cost is still born by the taxpayer. if a private street is constructed with private dollars, im guessing they probably dont get to pay for the police protection.

Not sure about NJ but MA was toying with making it a law...I'll try & find the article to link.

Many stores such as Costco, Nordstrams...Home Depot hire cops to do their undercover security

Some links:
http://www.eot.state.ma.us/downloads/PoliceDetail/regs_draft091308.pdf (broken link)

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety: "...Advocates believes that Congress stressed the need for a study to determine the effectiveness of stationing uniformed police officers in highway work zones because of its awareness of and continuing frustration with the poor record of work zone safety operations... Advocates believes that a controlling element of any study protocol adopted by the agency must be the use of successful Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) for quantifying the benefits of any countermeasures for work zone safety enhancement, including the use of uniformed police officers. Work zone safety data are extraordinarily poor, and, over the years, FHWA has done little to improve the prevailing disaggregated approach to measuring success or failure in improving work zone safety. Even baseline work zone information, such as the annual number of miles of fixed construction sites as one denominator for measuring crash, fatality, and injury rates, is not available.... Put simply, Advocates strongly advises the agency to adopt a sound scientific basis for the prospective study. One approach among many is to adopt a study premise which places uniformed officers on some sites and not on others, while controlling as many governing site variables as possible, including geometry, cross-section, traffic volume, vehicle mix, and other conditions to ensure comparable operating conditions..."

I've searched NJ DOT and can't find anything that mandates it

Maybe it's just me...but I think the life of a road construction worker far out weighs any other arguments in this thread or the NJ forum for that matter........ this forum has really slid to the bottom in the last few months
Kate, I'd love to take you for a ride on the racetrack and show you what "floor it" means
No need to get so aggravated, relax.

Default Waste of Taxpayer Moneys?

As far as I know, the job is the same in every situation: increase public consciousness, protect the public from themselves, and ticket or arrest those that think the laws do not apply to them.

I see these as very necessary activities in the present world where so many are self-centered and regardless of others' well-being.
