From my understanding this place has been torn down completely.
Nope. I dont know if there were more then there is now, but there are loads of huge, abandoned buildings still there. completely deserted

Wow, this is all so interesting and facinating. I am a lifelong resident of NJ and never heard of this place before.

Can anyone confirm...have all the buildings been demolished?

Are there any plans for the buildings/grounds?

Where EXACTLY is this located???

It has definitly not been demolished. Just mapquest Cedar Grove High school and drive along the road. Its right there and its grounds are along the road for like a mile.

Ok, I'm looking at this on google maps. From Mountain Rd, Courter Ln turns into Sanitarium Rd which turns into Read Ave which leads out to Fairview Ave.

I guess the hospital grounds are all along Sanitarium Rd and Read Ave.

Are those roads accessible by car today? What about walking on these roads? Or is that stupid, like on the level of horror movie stupid where the moron runs up to the attic instead of running out the front door when confronted by the axe murderer in the kitchen?

As far as cops busting you...I could certainly see them busting you at night, but what about during the day? They could probably get you on trespassing even during the day if you go inside one of the buildings, but what if you are just walking around the grounds improving your cardiovascular health?

Essex Mountain Sanatorium is the one that was on Read Ave. It's gone.

Essex Mountian Sanatorium Hilltop - Verona, NJ - North Jersey Exploration

Overbrook is the one on Fairview Ave. All of those buildings were supposed to have torn down by now.

From the President... : Overbrook Hospital

They are on Fairview Ave, which connects Pompton Ave and Bloomfield Ave, which is NOT the same road as Cedar Grove High School.

You must be confusing Verona High School and Cedar Grove High School. If I remember correctly, Verona HS is on Fairview Ave which was the same road that former hospital was on (like Heather said). The buildings have all been demolished, which is a shame because it was a cool, old, abandoned, spooky place. It was one of NJ's many mysterious treasures.

However, a new facility has opened up on Grove Ave not too far from Cedar Grove High School on Rugby Road, however I don't think it houses mentally ill patients. It's called the Essex County Hospital Center
