I have progressive and have been extremely happy with there rates. My rate actually went DOWN this year and they offer a 20% discount if you pay up front.

I have NJM and the prices aren't bad. But I only qualified for it because my parents qualified for it so I was "in the system."

I've been seeing a lot of billboards and ads for High Point auto insurance, as well as NJ CURE. Maybe they're good? I've always heard Geico was a bit expensive around here, despite the advertisements.

Auto insurance could be that high, no matter who you go to. Bayonne and Hudson County in general is very densely populated, therefore more chance of an accident, more chance of a stolen car.

I live in a rural area and only pay $1200 a year through Progressive for 2 newer cars, full coverage. Where you live in NJ makes a huge difference- insurance companies not only look at your zip code, but even where in that zip code you live. But I would still take the time and shop around.

I am angry about my car insurance premiums! Did anyone else get a raise in their premium recently? I was told that the great state of NJ was re-evaluated and all car insurance premiums were going up. Sure enough I called around to find out some companies even wanted to charge me DOUBLE what I am currently paying. I have the highest limits on everything so naturally my insurance is a little higher, but I just went from $850 per 6 months to $1050 per 6 months for doing nothing wrong! To top things off it is only a 2009 Honda Accord!

The quote they gave me was from Progressive and it was I think $2,000 a year, but I checked with esurance and geico today and esurance was $285 down and $146 a month and geico was either $91 a month and $123 down or $464 for 6 months.

Some other companies to try for quotes would be Electric Insurance Electric Insurance - Car Insurance and Homeowners Insurance, Instant Online Quotes Available...
and Liberty Mutual.
I had Liberty Mut many years until they raised the rates a bit then Electric now for several years, they came in several hundreds cheaper.

Try IFA Insurance. I was recommended to them by a friend and so far its been really good. Its Basic liability, I pay twice a year about $175 and some change, for 1 car and only myself. I did it online but you could also call. Just google IFA auto insurance. Very Easy And Extremely Cheap.
