Education? Property taxes? Cost of living? All of those matter to raising a family too, and Newark doesn't qualify for any of that.

Oh my God, so many people are just dense. This list is not entitled "Best Municipalities in the USA to Raise a Family" ... it's entitled "Best CITIES in the USA to Raise a Family".
Seriously? Are so many people this dumb that they cannot understand this?

Me thinks you might be the dumb one. The title of the survey is "The 100 Best (and Worst) Places to Raise a Family."
Perhaps a reading comprehension class might be in order before you get all superior next time?

Was (and Worst) part added after the fact? I didn't remember seeing that the first time I saw it.
No matter what, Newark and JC are listed in the top 50, which means that they are better than say, Columbia, SC, Tucson, Arizona, etc. etc.
Tucson is a freakin' resort and retirement destination with one of the top universities on the West Coast. ARE YOU SERIOUS!?

Don't know...not sure. But I know it never said "city".
The whole list is a joke.

I will say that these lists, just like all other lists of it's type are kind of silly. They attempt, through research data, to come up with information that should be, in many ways, subjective, and based on individuals' needs and desires.
But let me make something clear, folks. In NJ, most people live in their suburban town, and frown upon NJ's mid-sized cities such as Newark and Jersey City. NJ residents largely have a suburban mindset, and to make matters more extreme, NJ's suburbs are among the safest in the nation.
Compare the crime index of Newark and Jersey City (per capita, per 100,000 residents) to other cities of similar size (~250,000 - 300,000 people) and you may be very surprised to learn that these "big, bad cities" which many NJ residents frown upon are actually quite safe in comparison to other cities similar in size. I know that statistically, Jersey City is much safer than cities similar in size (such as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Orlando, St. Petersburg, etc).
Just something to consider. In NJ people foolishly compare safety in cities to safety in suburbs. Why would an intelligent person do this? It makes no sense.
Perhaps even more aggrivating is that people OUTSIDE NJ think that NJ, even it's larger, "less safe" cities, are really dangerous places. Not so much the truth. Compare Newark's (a city widely criticized for being a dangerous place) crime stats to Buffalo NY's crime stats (a city almost identical in size). Buffalo is more dangerous in almost every single crime category.
Hopefully this post puts things in perspective for people. NJ is a pretty darn safe place to live, we are lucky to live here, seriously.

First of all, I don't know who you are, because I've never seen you on here, but I've been posting here for a long time, so please don't come at me throwing insults ... it's not very tactful of you.
Secondly, and to address your post/insult...all of the municipalities on that list are CITIES, none are suburbs. Find me one that isn't a city on that list. Where is Ridgewood, NJ ? Where is Greenwich, CT? Where is Scarsdale, NY?

As Obero's been here for a year longer than you, perhaps the reading comprehenson comment is valid.

Again, the title of the article *is* places to live, not cities, although I think it's subjective. Burlington, Vermont, the top "city" on it's list, only has a population of 40,000.
Which means that the entire list is a fraud, then.

Please stop harping on safety. Cost of living, property taxes, education. Can you seriously tell me with a straight face that it's better to live in JC or Newark than it would be in Tucson AZ or Columbia SC?

Hey sweep, I posted up thread showing the list of 29 criteria the list creators actually used. Education was not one of them, and I don't think cost of living was either. That may make it a stupid list to you, but you can't argue with the results on the basis of factors the list by design didn't even measure.

A) Columbia SC is pretty crime ridden, and seeing that the state of SC ranks every year near the bottom nationally in terms of education, I would suspect that Columbia's school system straight up sucks.
B) I do not know enough about Tucson to make a comparison.
C) Easy on the attitude. I didn't come at you with a chip on my shoulder, so take it easy.
