I am moving to Monmouth County next week. I like it there.
I didn't mean it as a slight. It is about 14-15 miles from Keyport to Staten Island though, driving. Much less as the crow flies.

I don't think anyone's out to call you an idiot or imply that you are. I can see how it would seem to a person that Monmouth County is a world away from NYC, but the fact remains it is less than 15 miles from NYC and it is in the NY metro area. My brother lives in Hazlet and I have a good friend who lives in Marlboro, and it is definitely NY metro area - all NYC tv and radio stations, many people commuting to NYC, etc. In fact, my friend in Marlboro chose Marlboro to be close to his family in Staten Island, where he is from and most of his family still is. I'm sure he gets excited to cross the OBX when visiting family! I know his kids get excited to cross it to see their grandparents.

That's what's so nice about Monmouth County, though. It's the only county in Northern NJ which is also "the shore" while being part of the NYC metro area. Living there feels a world away from NYC, unlike a lot of counties further north, but access to the city is almost as easy as it is for those other counties.

The Driscoll Bridge psychology continues to alter the perception of Northern New Jersey residents that think that Monmouth and even parts of Middlesex County are part of South Jersey. The only way these places can be considered a part of South Jersey is if you comprised a population density map with a centroid fulcrum of population, which would probably reside somewhere between Edison and Metuchen. However, in terms of land distribution, Monmouth County is undoubtably North Jersey. For instance, if you used Holmdel as a start point, it would be less distance, miles wise, to Montague (northernmost NJ) than it would be to Bridgeton, which isn't even the southern tip of NJ.

Oh come on, you still label Monmouth County as "Northern NJ". That's ludicrous. Monmouth County may be 15 miles from Staten Island/NYC - I find it hard to believe, but I have no experience commuting from MC to NYC. However, it is certainly not considered North Jersey by the general population of the state, nor does it feel culturally similar. Central Jersey, yes. Hell, NJ's own tourism website lists Monmouth as part of the "Shore" region, along with Ocean County. The counties which are generally considered part of North Jersey and the NYC metro area are listed as NJ's "Gateway" region by the state government.

All of this might be true, but it's still not North Jersey in my mind.

Getting back on track........

As others have said, I can drive about an Hour and do anything anyone else in the rest of the country can do (depending on the season) Skiing, hiking, biking, shopping, beaching, white water rafting, rock climbing, surfing, yachting, deep water fishing, flying, broadwayshowing, aquariuming, watching hookers hookering, whatever. OK so, I made some words up but, you get my point. lol

OMFG the food. Maybe because I am spoiled (and fat) but there is NO place outside of the NYC metro area / NE to get awesome Italian food. Fughetaboutit. Nothing like the ethnic fast food either, like beef patties, pizza, chinese food, gyros, shawarmas, subs/hoagies. Even if you use the word Porkroll in other parts of the country, and you make them fry it and put it on a roll with some cheese and a hard over fried egg, it aint the same. Hell, even the hard rolls arent the same. Forget about finding a portuguese roll or a REAL Bagel. and OMFG the Bakeries!!!!! NOTHING in the world better than the Italian and Portuguese bakeries we have here. Local, cheap, little puffs of heaven... (can you tell i like my food?)

NYC nightlife, hands down the best in the world. The most beautiful people in the world. The best music in the world.

At least in North Jerzy, anything you want, any time of day, 24/7 (unless its hard liquor late or on sunday-duh) but even that can be found in the ghettos. Whaddaup my people!!!

It's kind of funny that you love the food here in Jersey, when that is the thing I miss most about NYC, sorry but the food here sux. Especially the take out. Maybe better than Iowa or something but not good from a NY'ers perspective!

the things I love about NJ:
*Cheap gas you don't have to pump yourself!!
*Good public schools
*PARKING!! Love love love, that you have a parking spot where you live, where you work, where you shop even the street, love it.
*So many family friendly activities
*All the different types of nature, we've got marshland, forrests, beach, mountains.
*did I mention the gas?
*Friendly people without being all down south friendly and paitient.

One thing that irks me about jersey? Who the heck decided left hand turns need to be made from the right lane?!!? UGH

As for Monmouth County, IMO it's south jersey. But it would be really interesting to know, the guy whose brother is in SI, when someone asks him "where in Jersey does your brother live?" what does he say north or south jersey? My bet is on "he lives in south jersey, down by the shore"

Ha. NYers HATE the Jersey Jughandles. In actuality, it is a very efficient way of handling and dispersing traffic. There are lots of intersections in NY, especially Long Island, that can use a jughandle! Why do NYers feel such disdain for the jughandle? FYI, most Northeastern states have jughandles, it's not just NJ (CT, DE, PA all use jughandles).

The food in NJ is great, but not as great overall as in the big city. It's like Long Island and Westchester. That's not unique to NYC/NJ. In every major metropolitan area, the center of the city is the cultural/dining/nightlife center of things.

The first time I went back to Brooklyn and sat through 3 light changes at an intersection I fell in love with the Jersey Jughandle. No moron turning left from the right lane, no sitting behind some bozo who thinks signaling is optional and no selfish ahole stopping 4 lanes of traffic to make a U-turn.

Access to the shore, the beaches, the big ocean.
Also access to mountains in eastern PA and lower NY state.
Mobility via mass transit - NJ Transit and Amtrak.
Proximity to large cities on I95 corridor - Boston/New England, NYC, Philly, Baltimore & DC.
Diversity in food, restuarants, and establishments.
Diversity in economy/jobs.
You never feel landlocked, you can just get out there and "GO".
