When did I say any of that?
The ignorant can shop wherever they like. They don't need Walmart; they just think they need Walmart. They're ignorant and irrational.

I "want to get rid of walmart"? Well, kind of. Not by legislation, but by competition. It doesn't benefit anyone, really. With no Walmart, people would still be able to get their low prices elsewhere, and for better quality and with more selection.
But yes, some people are so ignorant they will continue to want what's worse for themselves.

Not trying to defend Walmart, just adding my $.02
There is a reason Walmart is successful, and I believe they will succeed in NJ as well. Just because they might not be THE cheapest for many items, doesn't mean they aren't a worthwhile store. I think the big draw is that it is somewhat of an "everything under one roof" type of store. A matter of convenience for many. Don't see much of a difference from other big box stores.
How many times do people buy stuff at the local 7-11 even though they know they can get it cheaper elsewhere? Convenience
Price does not always drive the decision to shop somewhere.
And as far as the type of crowd and dress code of the customers, you know there are many, many others that fall into that category and are still successful stores. Ever been in a 24 hour Pathmark late at night?? Same crowd there.............

I dunno- I've always found K-Mart to have the worst crowds, selection and appearance- especially since Sears took them over a while back. Target is definitely the top out of those three- by far.
I've found that the food prices at Walmart are about the same as most of the supermarkets down here- a little higher on some items, a little lower on others. In general, I wouldn't suggest doing your weekly shopping at Walmart, but when you're there for something else, it's certainly convenient to be able to grab a few items (even if they're a few cents more) rather than making a trip to Shoprite.
BTW- Shoprite, at least where I lived in Woodbridge, was the one store that was always insanely crowded, and someplace I really didn't look forward to going to. It'd take 20-30 minutes to wait in the checkout lines most weekends, and that was with all the lanes open.

I agree with Bob. The ShopRite's I had first-hand contact with frequently, in West Caldwell, West Paterson and Morris Plains always were the most crowded, probably, much like Wal-Mart because their prices were lowest. However, when I moved to south Jersey, my experiences with Zallie's Shop Rite in Medford were much more positive. Same with the Shop Rite in Cherry Hill, which I think wasn't owned by Zallie's.

I agree with BCJ. I avoid Wal-Mart like the plague. The crowd looks like what you'd find in most municipal court proceedings, plus a decent illegal alien contingent toting one-too-many kids in the shopping carts. The hillbillies are also in there as well, though they're not too prevalent in my particular area, thank God!
One time this summer when the marine supply store was closed I popped into Wal-Mart to purchase some oil for my boat. It was a Friday night, which must have been a known time of "popularity" over there. There were THREE Brick Twp. Police cars just sitting outside the door with the officers keeping a tight watch over the presumed gang members who were hanging out near the front entrance (their tats gave them away). I assume they came to Brick from Lakewood since I don't think there is a Wal-Mart there.
The only other time I've gone there this year was to buy windshield wipers since AutoZone wanted to rip me off so badly I grinned and beared the trip.

K-Mart has worse crowds? Where? I was just in K-Mart in Paramus and, like other times I've gone during the week, hardly anyone was there. I park close to the entrance, unlike Walmart, where I had to park in the middle of an asphalt ocean, and dodge ghetto-blasting hoopties all vying for a closer spot.

Walmart, here in NJ, doesn't have meat or produce. Even if we had a Walmart with meat and produce, anyone with a modicum of brains wouldn't buy those things at Walmart, but would opt for any supermarket, like Shoprite, instead.
Since an educated shopper will be going to Shoprite at some point anyway, for meat and produce, dairy, coldcuts, etc. it doesn't make sense to "grab a few items (even if they're a few cents more)" at Walmart. Wait till you go to Shoprite (which would probably be more frequently, anyway, since you're going there for perishables) and get better stuff for less money.

Shoprite does get crowded, but it's still a different crowd than what I see in Walmart. There's a reason Walmart provides scooters for obese people and Shoprite doesn't. And parents in Shoprite usually keep a tight rein on their kids, usually keeping them in the cart, not running around like animals as I saw at Walmart. And again, the parking at Shoprite isn't the asphalt ocean that Walmart has, with RV's and semi-trailer's camped out in it like a trailer park. Also, if you avoid the busy times at Shoprite you won't have to deal with crazy crowds. Whenever I go, I sail through the store and rarely have to wait for a checkout lane to open. I have never experienced that at a Walmart, not even a 24-hour Super Walmart past midnight.
