My view of this differs: most people who ask about heavily Jewish towns, for example, aren't concerned about driving another 8 minutes to temple; they're looking for a place where culturally they will feel that they (and more importantly, their kids) "fit in". I don't see that as very different than seeking to avoid "overwhelmingly Indian" town for the same reason of wanting to live somewhere you "fit in". Does this mean that Jews cannot "fit in" in an overwhelmingly Christian town? Of course not. Does it mean that all Jews feel this is important? Of course not. Does it apply to some of them? Clearly. I don't see how this is different.

My position is that no kind of bigotry is OK, which is also internally consistent.
Your position may be internally consistent, but you've been thoroughly inconsistent in applying your position: criticizing only whites when they make these type of inquiries. But that inconsistency doesn't originate with you -- it's the classic latte-liberal mindset.

As for the comment about "preaching" -- that suggests that I was attempting to criticize OP's morality and yet I made it quite clear that I was not doing this.
At best, you're attempting to portray her in a negative light (unsophisticated, uneducated, uninformed) whether on moral grounds or not, while giving a free pass to the those who are attacking her unfairly.

No, I didn't criticize here when she made "these type of inquiries". I thought her initial post was completely reasonable, as I've already explained.

Who's mind-reading now No, I wasn't trying to make her look like some kind of village idiot. If the other posters started arguing that bigotry was acceptable, and that ethnocentricism was a good idea, I would criticize their arguments too. There is no "double standard".

To the poster who said he or she would avoid Sayreville "like the plague" because it has "lots of low-class bigoted white people." Wow, especially in a thread that's trying to make this poor woman sound like a racist, that level of stereotyping just blows my mind. There are good and bad things about every town, including, I'm sure the one YOU'RE from. Wow. I would avoid YOU like the plague.

To the others who take such issue with what she said: Living alone can be an incredibly isolating experience at times. Why do we have to take such issue with a woman who is looking for neighbors she can share as much as possible in common with? I'm not saying she can't be friends with anyone who's black or Indian or Asian, but didn't the Indian enclave in Iselin emerge because the Indians who moved there were looking for THE EXACT SAME THING? Other people with similar backgrounds to forge relationships with?

Give her a break. Stop the hypocrisy.

I am not too familiar with Middlesex County, I had been living up North for the past 2 years, not originally from NJ.

Can anyone suggest an area in Middlesex County for a single, young, white, female?
Wow, I can not believe the over reaction by some, and the really rude, disrespectful and bigoted responses Moderator cut: orphaned by others.

I just looked over my original post and am baffled how anyone can interpret my request as a bigoted statement...No where did I say I was not open to a diverse community. What I said, and I quote "Truthfully I looked at a few complexes in Edison and they were overwhelmingly Indian, I really did not feel like I fit in.".

The reality of it, at least in my opinion...is that a "young, white, female" would not fit in with a community that was overwhelmingly Indian...as was the case in a few of the communities I saw in Edison and Iselin.

If I may be even more honest...as some have posted, I did not care for the smell of curry...I will leave it at that.

Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, Moderator cut: orphaned . I find it very disturbing though that I am being attacked for asking a question that I have seen several other posters ask...only difference being that I said I was "white"...rather than Asian, Gay, Muslim, etc

On a positive note, to those of you that provided useful information, or even defended my position, I say thank you.

My search continues...thanks again to the nice, friendly, voices of reason on this site!

That would be my suggestion also. I used to work there so know the area very well. It's not ony safe but more suburban.
On the Last Link, some are in South River, also a good safe area. It's next to East Brunswick.

Polite or not, I know more than one person who has not enjoyed living in a condo/apartment in an Indian neighborhood with the strong food smells that come through the walls. It's a very legitimate concern.
The food smells are a very legit concern. As much as I absolutely love Indian food...

As someone who is always on the lookout for racism, I did not find her post offensive. My ex-husband lives in Iselin, and if you go down Oak Tree Road, it's "Little India." That is fine. I love that we have that little piece of diversity. I think it's awesome that our State of NJ is so multicultural. But some areas of Edison/Iselin are really into making it all Indian. Indian food, Indian stores, Indian everything. So here's someone moving to the area that says, "I don't know if I'd fit there." I think we should cut her a break. But Edison is huuuuuuuuuge, and there are many areas that are not as you might think. So if you're still thinking Edison, keep looking!

Ethnocentrism in disguise.

Many people use odor to judge the moral character of others. In fact, odors have been used widely to distinguish "good" from "evil." A dishonest person is regarded as a "skunk" because they are people we want to avoid. And how about the heavily perfumed woman who is regarded as promiscuous and immoral?

Odor has also been used to indicate virtue. We are attracted to people who "smell like a rose" or are "clean as a whistle." Our society has made a practice of sending flowers or scented letters as a symbol of love and respect.

So when the original poster says she does not like the smell of curry, we know what she really means. So for those of you who hate double-standards and political correctness why do you adhere to it? So why don't you come out and tell us the real reasons why you don't want to live near Indians, Chapstick? Instead of trying to tiptoe through the minefield of political correctness, run right through it and let it explode from your lips, you'll feel so much better.

Anyway, are you cool with hispanics? Many are white (just so you know, "Hispanic" is not a race). Perth Amboy has some great neighborhoods; so does New Brunswick. They are white Hispanic neighborhoods. I am assuming that is ok, because you didn't break down your white preference into any specific ethnicity. Oh wait, did you only mean whites descended from northern Europeans?

Don't get frustrated with me, Chapstick is the one who introduced race into her thread.
