New to the state, how does the car inspections work in this state?
I registered my vehicle and they gave me a slip and said present it to the inspection place along with my license and that is all she told me, but then I took it to a place and they told me that only state facilities are free. Where are these state facilities? I live in Bayonne so I would go to one anywhere in Hudson, Essex, Union, or even Bergen counties. Or how can I find out where they are?

You can go anywhere in the state but remember to carry your license, insurance (original copy; fax copy not allowed) & registration. they are very thorough so make sure your car is in good condition (lights, tires, mirrors). MVC locations are free where as third party locations have a fee but may be more convenient.

State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission
use the link to find an inspection station near you. Most you do not need an appointment for. You simply show up with vehicle, show them your license and registration card (or temp registration), they ask you to get out of the vehicle and they run a series of tests to check emissions, suspension, brakes, safety, lights, horn, etc. It all usually takes no more than about 10-15 min. Then you are given your car back and a new inspection sticker will be applied to the inside lower left corner of your windshield. If you pass. The BIG number tells you the month and little number tells you the year of when you have to get it inspected again. Older cars are ever 2 years. Newer are every 4. If you fail, you will be given a report detailing why you failed. You then have 30-60 days to have the car fixed and brought back to have it inspected again.
While you do not have to pay anyone at the time of inspection, State inspection is not free. Its bundled in with the registration fees you pay every year.

HEHE, I forgot about this. Its completely illegal so I cannot recommend it. BUT, if you find the right place (ask the locals), you walk intothe shop and ask them for an inspection sticker. You do not ask to have your car inspected. They will still have to fill out the paperwork legally but for the right price (usually $100-$200) they look the other way when it comes to alot of infractions. This is a pay to play state.

my advise. Use the free state run stations if your car is 100% up and has no issues. BUT never go at the end of month. The lines are brutal.

For the most part this doesn't work anymore. Maybe it would as far as things like a window crack or something like that, but not for emissions. In order for a private station to pass you they actually have to hook your car into a state computer connected to a state web server and if it doesn't pass, the machine won't print out a valid inspection sticker with the barcode.
If you can pass emissions and have some other issue with your car, they could probably still pass you.

It still goes on, how "they" trick the system is they run the emission test on another car that will pass.
