The Duncan projects (shut down now) are way over near 440. Depending on what part of "Lincoln Park area" OP refers to, they could be a mile or so away.

Thanks! We are looking to spend anywhere from $1000 to $1400 for now and tried looking without a realtor and it was a bit sketchy in some areas. Thanks for all your help and the hunt continues.

You should be able to get something in that price range. Some blocks that are worth a closer look:

the heights (e.g. North of JSQ)
the area between JFK and West Side, Harrison avenue and further North.

There are also a few decent blocks between JFK and Bergen -- for example, Duncan ave, Glenwood ave, Highland ave (anything North of Highland between JFK and Bergen shouldn't be too bad)

Generally, Bergen avenue itself is very sketchy, as is most of the area up the hill and east of Bergen. Blocks between JFK and Bergen are a mixed bag -- with the exceptions I mentioned, they're mostly pretty sketchy. Likewise, Communipaw and further south gets rough very quickly.

Best of luck.

Agreeing with Elflord and...

waiting for the JC hataz to flood this thread with the "DON'T MOVE TO JC!!, MOVE TO THE SURBURBS OR MOVE TO MY TOWN!!" rant...

I also from NY and found my place in JCH on Craigslist.com so I didn't have to deal with a realtor but I also realized that anything south of the Light Rail going towards MLK Blvd. after Liberty is, kinda sketchy and north going towards Hoboken was better.

I also commute to the city, work in Crown Heights, and my commute is about an hour and a half, take the bus into Port Authority the MTA.

Also since yall are a young couple Hoboken might be a place you two may want to hang out since it has a lot of bars and resturants, also Grove St has some quaint eateries also.

You have the Hudson/Bergen Light Rail, and PATH and like I said NJ transit buses but remember these do not run 24 hours, like MTA and they run on a schedule. If you miss one another doesn't come in a few minutes. That's the only thing I miss about NYC, MTA.

Remember JC is a city and before you decide I suggest you visit the intended neighborhood on the weekends and also at night.

Also some apts you might have to pay for water usage but you shouldn't have a problem finding a place in your price bracket.

Good luck and from one native NY'er to another soon to be a NJersian..

Why dont you look into West New York, Weehawken, Union City or Guttenberg. You will have the ferry right there and hoboken is 5 - 10 min away. These areas I would choose over Jersey City unless oyu can afford to be on the waterfront down there. I don't know if you know this but JC was rated as one of the top 10 dangerous cities in NJ..... I work part time in JC and like I said unless you can secure something by newport or grove be very careful. Take a day trip and check out the area for yourself. I don't know how much you can afford but if you look at the areas i suggested you can find a nice 2 bedroom apt modern for prob between 1200 to 1800... Good luck

That's like saying all of NYC is dangerous. Of course it has it's rough parts and it has its nicer parts. IT'S A CITY!!

I swear, smh..

Just do your research and you should be fine anywhere you decide to move.

Here we go again. One of the best ways to bring out a lot of ignorant responses is to mention Jersey City in a post on city-data.

I wouldn't call the Lincoln Park area horrible, but it's definitely a shabby section of the city in some spots (mainly the spots towards Geenville). Greenville is the worst section in JC, which is the southern section of the city towards Bayonne.
I would look at the downtown section, but expect to raise your budget (Palus Hook and Newport are parts of downdown but they're pretty ritzy).
JC Heights and JC Square are OK, it's appearence along with it's worth is better than the Lincoln park area.

~

If all doesn't go well with JC, than try looking into Bayonne.
You'd really find a lot with your budget, and it's a whole lot safer than Jersey City. The commute into Manhattan from Bayonne is still ideal to.

My opinion - for $1,400 just get a one bedroom in either Downtown Jersey City (Grove Street area) or Hoboken. If you are a young couple, you'll just be happier than any other part of Hudson County.

I agree, with a $1400 budget you should focus on downtown JC and only look into other parts of JC as a last resort. I used to rent in downtown JC for $1200 (1BR) and know people who rent in the same building for $1300.
