It's unfortunate that Passaic County's politics have been dominated by essentially two large urban centers, and to a lesser extent, Clifton. As I said earlier, this just shows that towns such as Wanaque, Pompton Lakes, Ringwood, West Milford, etc. were fed up. If the figures are released for Paterson, I will be shocked if voter turnout was actually that low.

As a former Paterson resident, and a "mostly" Democrat, someone would have had to put a gun to my head to vote for Corzine. I, for one, couldn't believe he gave up a job as a U.S. Senator to run as Governor in the first place. He probably could have continued to be NJ's Senator until he was as old as Lautenburg. What, in God's name, is the "appeal" of being Governor of NJ? For anyone, it's like being made "Captain of the Titanic" after it has hit the iceberg.
I suspect that after Corzine's stunning performance, I could have run Attila the Hun, holding a small kitten, with a sign around his neck saying "Lower Property Taxes" and won handily!

LMAO...as another former Patersonian and Democrat, i completely agree. I could imagine the voter turnout to be low as well. Not to excuse throwing away a vote, but i'm sure many refused to give their vote to Corzine and would much rather not vote at all for Christie. I voted for the Independent. Those that did not vote should just keep their mouths shut for the next 4 years. They shouldn't have nothing at all to complain about.
I promise to lower property taxes...Who will vote for me???

wow, I am having a field day with these numbers. Sociologists are probably loving this too.
VeradoDan: You have interesting point in your post. But as elflord pointed out, look at the way Maplewood, South Orange, Montclair, and Glen Ridge went. Those are fairly wealthy towns, but they are also some of the more diverse towns of Essex County (With the exception of Glen Ridge).
Even though I'm originally from Morris County (which is a heavily Republican county), Essex County is by far my favorite county because of its rich history, beautiful communities and landscapes, and interesting demographics. It has one of the sharpest contrasts in both wealth and race. The eastern half of the county tends to be more working class/lower class, whereas the western half is more upper/middle class. Essex Fells being one of the wealthiest communities in NJ and Newark, East Orange, and Irvington being some of the poorest. The eastern half is more diverse, while the western half is predominantly white.
With the exception of Nutley, I don't think the contrasts of this county could be more even than the results of the election as displayed on this map:
I'm sure the results for Bergen, Passaic, Morris, and Union counties are just as interesting. If I ever find the time, I would analyze the results of those two counties as well. The only result that I thought was surprising was Glen Ridge, I thought they would've been red on this map.

Does anyone have a town-by-town breakdown of the way Essex County voted? I found the Morris County breakdown interesting (but predictable, as it's a far more politically homogenous county), but have not been able to find one for Essex.

Montclair was 5:1 Corzine. Livingston Christie won in a close race, West Orange 2:1 Corzine. South Orange and Maplewood around 5:1 but im not 100% sure about that. Outside of the Eastern Core votes for Corzine were down among the entire county from his 2005 election.

Hey, Bergen County: you disgust me!
Things look much better in my adopted home county of Monmouth. Utterly predictable that Corzine would win in Asbury Park, Long Branch, and Neptune. Safe to go home to Bradley Beach, though.
Check out Howell and Red Bank numbers:
Howell
Christie: 11,065; Corzine: 3,985; Daggett: 874
Red Bank
Christie: 1,443; Corzine: 1,443; Daggett: 199
Corzine lost in Rumson. Wonder if Springsteen secretly voted against him.

I'm surprised that there wasn't a separate count for Upper Montclair.
