Default Advice on Jersey area

My husband is looking into a job in Newark which would require us to move with our two children (under the ages of 4) to somewhere with a fairly easy commute... other than business trips out there we know NOTHING about the area, or the east coast much in general -- what are good area's to look into?

The Ironbound section of Newark is safe and a nice area to live. Extremely convenient in terms of public transportation and your husband's commute would be a breeze. The Ann St. school is "blue-ribbon" and is K-8th grade.
