You use to have a local channel with Kent Manahan as the Host.
At one time there was a Steve Taylor from Lake Arrowhead who reported on that show. He had been a neighbor of mine from that area.
It was nice local NJ reporting.........I'm thinking it was out of Morristown, but not sure.
Nothing special, no special effects.......just local news.
There seems to be a path that TV and radio stations take to get licensed that starts out as being licensed to a local town, then they move their transmitters to NYC or Philly in order to pick up the populations of those areas along with NJ. I've seen this repeatedly.
There is supposed to be a new station licensed to Middletown NJ that will be transmitting from one of the skyscrapers in NYC as soon as the FCC approves building it. Another new station licensed to Wilmongton DE will be built in Philly.

Actually, for the most part, it's quite the opposite. Many "New York" stations have their transmitters or studios in New Jersey to save money. The heritage WMCA did this. And until very recently, Z100 in NYC had their studios somewhere in Hudson County - I believe West New York.
If your city of license is Middletown, NJ, they're not going to let you transmit from ESB or One Times Square in a million years. There isn't even enough space there for legit NYC stations to transmit. WFAN still has their tower out on City Island in the Bronx because there's no room.
Its obvious. Large cities you have coverage that goes out around 50 miles or so. We have 2 large cities that cover most of the state. And when something happens in NJ, they usually cover us. The large city stations don't want to go to Jersey. They know the city people won't care as much. Channel 9 tried it for awhile. Didn't seem to work..
Well the official FCC application is for a Middletown, NJ license with a transmitter either at 4 Times Square or Empire. That's just across the water a bit and covers Middletown fine along with the rest of the metro area.

I believe the poster was correct about the Middletown FM application. FM's usually end up on the ESB or One Times Square, and AM's usually end up in the Jersey swamps. It's not about saving money, it's about putting the antenna in the most effective place.
AM = often needs multiple towers (for directional arrays). The towers should also be located where there's good ground conductivity, like the swamps of Northern NJ. Also the towers need to be much larger because the wavelength of AM is much greater than the wavelength of FM. The towers are located on the ground instead of on top of buildings.
FM = very short antennas because of short wavelengths. They work best on top of skyscrapers because they use line-of-sight propagation through the air. The higher they are, the better chance of no obstacles being between the transmitter and you.
