I'm headed from northern NJ to just south of the Washington D.C. area (barely into Virginia) for Thanksgiving. I've never driven the route before, but am told I-95 is a nightmare, especailly on a holiday. Any suggestions for good routes? We're planning to leave early Thursday morning...how early should we try to get out?

Thanks for any suggestions!

It may not be that horrible, especially compared to the traffic out there later today.

You don't have really good alternates. Take the western loop around the Washington beltway. Otherwise.... the earlier you leave, the better.
