NJ Shore to CT Shore? (buy, property tax, living)

Like so many others in NJ we just got another incredible rate hike in our property tax bill. ($8,000 now) Even with an increased tax rebate it is a difficult pill to swallow. We are starting to consider a move out of state to make the most out of the last two decades of our work lives. We love the shore, but are very tired of the masses of people who flock there every weekend in the summer. We would love some space from humanity, but don't want to isolate. We are northeasterners through and through and would not be happy with a radical culture shift going south. We are also gay and need to be around communities where that is not an issue.

We have been researching the area of the eastern CT shore. A comparison of the cost of living between Monmouth and New London counties puts New London at about 12% less. We have been over at the CT forum asking questions , but I wanted to get a NJ perspective on this relocation idea.

Given the current state of NJ and the next 10 years, would a move to CT be wise or should we stay by the shore, pay off the mortgage, earn good money in NJ and buy a "get-away" in the Adirondacks?
