well first off where do you live? that will dictate where your doctor is and where he/she is affiliated with.
i had my son at St. Joseph's children's hospital in Paterson. and i was very happy. my cousin had both her kids at chilton and she was happy

And I had three at Englewood. I really liked the maternity suite, and the food was terrific! But, the above poster is correct. Find an OBGyn and that will dictate the hospital you deliver at.

Default Hospitals

Two hospitals that I can recommend are:

Hackensack Hospital - I delivered there a year ago and had a good experience. It's a highly regarded hospital with a topnotch NICU.

Valley Hospital - My SIL delivered there and liked it

St. Barnabas in Livingston is supposed to be another good one.

And contrary to what everyone else said, I actually picked the hospital first, then find the doctor affiliated with the hospital.

FM me if you need more info.

Well, I would recommend Mountainside or Overlook because they have a really top notch anesthesiologist to do your epidural.

Seriously though, if you have a normal pregnancy, most of the above hospitals would be fine. I have spent time in several of the above, and I know people in the other ones. The only two on your list I wouldn't recommend are St Mary's or Meadowlands. The rest are good. It seems you have picked mostly community hospitals, so I am assuming you like the personal touches that community hospitals offer. On the other hand, if you have a high risk pregnancy, stick to the large centers with good NICUs. Those being St. Barnabas in Livingston, Hackensack, or St Joseph's in Paterson. The big centers all have the tendency to become crowded and crazed at times. If you are unlucky enough to be there at one of those times, and you aren't an emergency, you may feel a little neglected.

I was born in Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and returned there to give birth to my daughter 33 years later, like a salmon.

Nurses were great and the food was pretty good, too.

That's the only time in my life I was ever hospitalized, so I have nothing to compare it to. But my daughter grew up fine and healthy and I'm still alive, so I guess they knew what they were doing.

I have to agree with the poster who said pick the hospital first and THEN pick the doctor. Is this your first child? I dont think you need to bne overly concerned about the distance from your house it's not like the baby is just going to pop out.

I gave birth in NYC (Cornell) so I don't have experiance in the maternity wing but my son went to the ER 3x and was admitted once at Meadowlands, I would never go back. It was terrible, the hospital is small and old and the staff are not exaclty the nicest.

My son was also recently diagnosed with a medical condition and we were lucky enough to be near Hackensack when it first happened. The attention we reiceved there was AMAZING, the hospital is very nice, the staff are very friendly and welcoming and will go out of thier way for you. They have specialists of every kind there and the NICU & PICU are very very good. We have to go quite often and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this hospital. AND it is consistenly ranked one of the top 50 hospitals in the country. You are very lucky to have such a hospital within your options. We now live close to Chilton but if we need an ambulance unless it is a matter immediate life or death my son will be taken to Hackensack.

It honestly depends on what you are looking for. Are you have a complicated pregnancy and might need a great NICU? Or a low risk pregnancy? Do you want an epidural right away or do you want a drug free childbirth? Are you hoping to birth vaginally or do you care if you wind up with a c-section? A lot of Northern NJ hospitals have c-section rates close to 50%. That's a lot of c-sections! And many of them are because women didn't progress in labor fast enough (actually women are usually told that that their pelvises aren't big enough so that's why they didn't progress but that is usually a bunch of BS). There is some info on hospital statistics on ICAN of NJ - Home. Also, do you want the baby to stay with you after birth (known as "rooming in") or do you want the baby to go to the nursery? Personally, I went with midwives at a hospital with a low c-section rate and low epidural rate. They just happened to practice at a hospital with a level III NICU which was just a bonus to be since I didn't have any reason to expect to need it (and I didn't). If you wanted to consider Mountainside, Dr Winsome Parchment was voted a NJ "top doc." I've met her and she is a nice lady. I know she is open to supporting different birth options (i.e. a drug free delivery or an epidural). Another good suggestions is to narrow it down to a couple hospitals and go on tours. Once you find a hospital that you like, you can find a doctor associated with that hospital. St Barnabas was mentioned but they used to make moms share rooms. I'm not sure if they've changed that yet but I don't think any hospital is worth sharing a room post partum.
