Ocean City is a great walking town, but 42nd street is not near the stores or boardwalk. You'd be about 3 miles from the shops and most restaurants, however there is a trolley that runs every half hour that goes back and forth from the south end (where you'll be) to the downtown/boardwalk area. It would help to know how old your kids are; OC is more little kid friendly but teenagers would want the bigger rides in Wildwood, which is closer to Cape May. OC has more family-type restaurants, Cape May is known for expensive gourmet restaurants. although some of them are excellent. OC is also a dry town if that makes a difference.

Victorian PHOBIC?? Huh...?
Personally, I would ignore his "phobia" and go anyway. it is utterly GORGEOUS with lots to do; pristine and calm; best restaurants on the Jersey coast (MUST try the Mad Batter for breakfast and Uncle Bill's Pancake House for the kids). I've been going to Cape May twice a year for 23 years. It can get very crowded in the mid-summer season, but the visitors and business owners are very polite and low-key.
Stuff to do: You can take a trolley tour of the town, play minature golf, bike, take the Dolphin-watch boat tour, go to Sunset Beach for the daily flag-lowering ceremony, go to the Lobster House on the outskirts of town to sit and have a meal outside on the docks (or inside if you prefer). They also have a great fresh take-out section, there's a movie theatre there, ice cream shops, LOADS of artsy shops and boutiques along the outdoor, cobblestoned mall, the Cape May Zoo, The Light house, visit the recently-restored Congress Hall which has its own shops and restaurants. the West of Cape May has a world-renowned bird sancturary.
I've stayed in many of the town's hotels if you need recommendations. I like the Jetty at the end of town, very quiet with its own cool section of beach - or if you want to stay in the center of town, there's the very clean and efficient Stockton which has its own miniature golf course and bike rental.
There's just nothing like Cape May, IMO. Perhaps hubby will be so charmed by the town's friendliness and atmosphere, he will get over his phobia - and maybe even become a Victorian fan

Thank you to all for your feedback - very helpful! An option is to rent a house near the 1200 block of New Jersey Ave in Cape May - we have been told it is a relatively easy walk to the "town center". Your thoughts?
Thank you again!

Any thoughts on good restaurants to take kids to? And a good night out away from kids (four of them between the ages of 1 and 8). Are there bike rentals there? Sounds like a nice place, we are looking forward to it!

Not sure off the top of my head where there's a bike rental shop, I know there is one, and as for food, normally I just look for a pizza place while I'm down there, or stop at a diner on the way home.
This site here should help though

Not sure exactly where to look, but I'm willing to bet you could definitely get a job in one of the shops on the boardwalk. It's not much pay, but it's a decent summer job. I know of at least one T-shirt shop run by Russians (I think) but I forget which beach it's in.

Cape May can be very nice, but the beaches require beach tags and parking meters proliferate. most side streets are quite narrow and parking is at a premium, a lot of residents have to purchase parking permits. Also there is not a lot to do if the weather is bad.
There are a few bike rentals in town, one is at Pacific and Sunset Blvd at West Cape May, where there is also the bird watching area.
Wildwood has free beaches, a decent boardwalk, amusement piers and water parks.
