I really don't mean to offend anyone here, but I have lived in Staten Island for three years and I work in Brooklyn. I am originally from a small city in Maryland. I love my job and finally feel that I have a career with the city of New York. I want to relocate to a small city or town in NJ that is an hour and a half or less from Staten Island (where I will work soon), and is populated by slightly less New Yorky people. It doesn't have to be super rich or snobby, just a place where you don't often hear that accent or get that tiresome attitude (it is so old about now). A town that is not populated so much by people moving out from Staten Island or Brooklyn... Anyone have any suggestions?
New Yorkers: I love your honesty and your humor, just need some distance. I'm a country person trying to live near a big city.
There are many towns around Central Jersey that are accessible to Staten Island, via the Outerbridge Crossing. Much of that area is far removed enough from Manhattan too.
From my experience, it seems like a lot of the Staten Islanders end up moving to those towns that aren't far from the outer bridge including Old Bridge, Matawan, Marlboro, Manalapan. I think if you want to avoid the ny transplants you need to move west of those areas into mercer, somerset, hunterdon counties.
A lot closer is towns right over the Goethals Bridge like anywhere around Cranford, Garwood, Kenilworth Westfield and so on. Some of these towns are literally a 15 minute local drive to SI. A bit shorter drive then going South over the OuterB and still a world apart from island existence.
I love South Jersey, like down in the Pine Barrens, as well as the areas near Philly. Though that may be a little far for you. Otherwise I'd look along the Route 1 corridor, south of the Raritan River. I don't like Monmouth County at all.
