My fiance and I are relocating to NJ for her job with Pfizer and are looking for a place to rent until we get the lay of the land. I myself am a wonderful by product of this lovely economy and therefore out of work so I want to keep my options of working in NJ and NYC open.

Can anyone recommend a nice, safe, convenient town to start looking for a rental?

Thanks so much!

Pfizer has quite a few locations, now that they've acquired Wyeth: the 42nd St. Headquarters in NYC, Pearl River, NY; Parsippany; Bridgewater...It would help to know WHERE the OP is going to be working.

What's your budget? You might try Summit. Good luck!

well then, there you have it. madison is a "nice, safe, convenient town to start looking for a rental". convenience, though, is rather dependent upon what you want it to be convenient for...its an easy commute by car to parsippany, and doable into NYC (although i wouldnt want to do this daily...many do) if thats what you mean. you could do a lot worse than to rent/buy there.

if you have other specific requirements, then you might want to list them to enable others to let you know which other locations might match.

Thanks everybody. I plead ignorance to what rent's might be for that area (I'm from Texas and the $ goes a long way for a rental) and what to expect in terms of the quality of a rental. However, I'm hoping anywhere from $1,500 - $1,700/mth (all in, including any fees) could get us what we want.

We are looking for a 2 bedroom rental. Neither of us want to live in an apartment. A duplex, townhome or condo is ideal. Something within driving distance of a train station. Preferable between Madison and a train stop to NYC if needed.

I'm hearing Madison, Summit, Parsippany. Any others?

My next question is how do I find these places to live?

Thanks very, very much.

The Pfizer relo people should be helping you. You need to ask for them to supply a local real estate person. That's pretty standard in the industry.

Actually, MOST relocation agreements do not dictate what agent or company you must use. They may have a favorite, which they will offer up as a recommendation that looks like it's your only option, but in most cases you can work with any agent you want, so long as their broker is part of the relo program you are using. And most of the major brokerages participate in most relo programs.
