I take route 31 southbound in the morning from around where it crosses route 57 in Washington Township down past route 78. I've wondered this for a while: where the hell is all the southbound traffic coming from? I seriously don't get it.

What's even more confusing is I see numerous PA drives going southbound here. Why the heck are they even on this road? To get to 31 south, they've had to come east on 57 from PA and then South on 31. Why not just take 78 the whole way? Every morning I try to understand why there's so much traffic here, and I never figure it out. It's baffling.

I travel 31 South from Oxford to Rt 78 every morning. Most of the people who are going south, if not going to 78, are going to Clinton, Flemington, Trenton etc.

The PA plates you see are people who come from the Stroudsburg area, not the Lehigh Valley. Possibly to work in Middlesex County or what not. They come out 46 and then down 31 to 78. I know because I see them passing me southbound as I wait to turn onto 31 myself.

What time are you on the road in the am? I'm on 31 from about 6:20 until about 6:40. 20 minutes isn't too bad for that stretch with minor traffic. It's worse on the way home. Really backs up in Hampton around the gas stations waiting to get through the light by A&P.

About the same time in the morning as you. The backup is always a pain near the A&P and McDonald's in Hampton, and then again through Glen Gardner.

Going home isn't as bad for me, I'm usually back after 7pm, so by then most of the traffic northbound has cleared. The road really needs to be expanded.

I hit 31 going home about 4 pm. Takes me about 35 minutes to get back to Oxford at that time.
