Hi all, I posted this in the New York forum, but am thinking it might be better over here

I'm looking at studying in NY starting this Sep, and would appreciate some advice on which neighbourhoods I should look at for accommodation.

I'd like:

something family friendly (have a 2 year old)
something latino friendly (my partner is mexican)
something not more than 45 minutes by public transport to lincoln centre
something less than $1200 a month rent (I know, it's budget - student life!)

Thanks in advance everyone!

I think you might like Weehawken, esp. the areas around Blvd East or the Reservoir (south of 495, but still on the top of the Palisade). It's a zip into Manhattan (Port Authority) on the bus and is steps away from Union City and West New York which are heavily Latino. Those towns would be handy for you too, but are not as family friendly IMO. I live in Weehawken and go to church and shop in UC and WNY. Hoboken is close too and has a lot to offer to young people. (But don't even think of trying to rent there for $1200!)

Rents here might tend to be a bit over your budget but I know there are places in 2-family homes that you can afford. You might need to hunt a bit.
