Well said. LMAO!!! How does he/she know anything? Didn't get out his car! They know about as much as you about newark. Nothing.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Read clearly. He said reputation. Reputation is in part formed in the media.

Reputation is drawn only in part from reality in most instances. The media-the national media in particular is not generally kind to Newark.

The last few years there has been more coverage but much of it is what you would call luke warm. You can always argue that they don't know, have never lived, etc.

Media, just like the people who create it has bias.

I used to work in their medical school and did live outside of the city. I would not recommend moving to that area by no means. I would drive to work and back through Newark but always made sure to lock my doors. Once during daylight hours i feld like in a crime movie-- while driving home there were police helicopter overhead and people running everywhere. I dont think you want to experience something like that and to always feel uncomfortable living in such a city. Goodluck anyhow!
Once during daylight hours on our last visit to NJ my mother and I were looking for my brothers place on Prospect in Hackensack. I always make sure my doors are locked but on this occassion they weren't. At a stop light some guy came out from nowhere and opened my door and tried to carjack us with a knife. Luckily I pushed him out and put my foot on the gas. There was a police helicopter flying overhead.

Anyway, how can one not see the improvements around Newark? We know it's not Beverly Hills but I have seen tons of new homes and many more u/c., new restaurants, stores and older apts. being renovated into condos. We use to live on Schuyler Avenue. Our old house still looks great. I even visited my old Maple Avenue School. Again, the population is growing for a reason and I definately see why.

First of all, I know Newark- I spent five years going to school in Newark, and I've built several projects in Newark. I've had to deal with having prostitutes and pimps strolling through our buildings while they were under construction, having trailers and cars broken into repeatedly, having tools stolen in broad daylight and then having the idiot who stole them try to sell them back to us two days later, and finding crack vials, needles, and condom wrappers practically every morning on the sidewalk, on the roof, and just about any other place you can imagine. I've spent more than enough time in Newark to know that its not someplace I want to live or raise a family, and to know that it earns the reputation that's in the papers every day.

Secondly, if you live at 1180, you don't live "in Newark"- you live in the one tiny little area of Newark thats started to get remotely decent, and your idea of "going out into the city" consists of asking your doorman where you can get some good Chinese delivered. You sound like the people who live in the high-rises on the waterfront in Jersey City and never leave their building other than to run to the PATH station to go to work in Manhattan, but they live "in the city"- please......

You've lost all credibility as one of the "defenders of Newark" now. If you'd like to regain it, go spend a year living in someplace like the numbered streets between Central Ave and South Orange Ave, or maybe near Clinton and Grove- then you can talk about how you live "in Newark". Until then, don't bother commenting, because I've probably spent more time "in Newark" than you ever will.

It's great that there are improvements but anyone can come on here and say they live there or used to live there. Some of these posters claim to be from other places on the other forums and come here and say it's NJ that they are from. Just saying you lived somewhere does not give you credibility because we are all on a web board so all bets are off.

I don't give the benefit of the doubt especially after I have seen your posts taking credit for pictures you pasted from websites. Your profile is completely different on the other forum. That you have hundreds of posts means nothing for that reason. Yes, you could say that about any poster but I visit other state forums and have seen the contradictory posts.

Your personal crime stories get really old. That stencil really gets old. You might be the greatest writer but that does not make your posts accurate or believable.

The people/person who post regarding what a city is like aren't asking about it's reputation as depicted by the media. They can logon and read it themselves. Stop trying to justify non-sense.

Everytime I walk out of 1180, I end up in Newark. Funny how that works. I bet you don't end up in Newark when you exit your home after a long day of watching the news and reading the newspaper before hating on Newark on city-data. Dang, now you hating on my doorman..LOL!!! Yep, a building in Newark has a doorman. I guess you're an equal opportunity hater, nice places as well as the slums.

Also, you go spend a year living in those places. Nevermind that, try spending a day living in Newark ..LOL!!

So..you went to school in Newark 10, 20 yrs. ago I bet and did some "projects" in the city who knows when. That has nothing to do with today. Nothing. Posters want real-time info on what's going on in the city today. I'll say it again, anybody can get stats by checking CITY-DATA. It sounds like you chose a very bad section of Newark to do your "projects". Ever heard of some security? What city in Amercia doesn't have thieves? If you'd get up off your couch, you'd know that.

I've lost my credibilty for living in a nice place in Newark? How much sense does that really make? NONE..You've lost the credibility you never had by making such a ridiculous statement. I guess I got to live in the hood to get some "street cred" huh? I live where I live but I don't partition myself from any section of Newark. I enjoy the city in which I reside in its entirety, the good, the bad and the ugly.

I'm impressed. I'm glad you've decided to out yourself. It's odd to see someone talk about themself like this but it's refreshing. I applaud you.
