and where, pray-tell, is the "black" part of town? i've gotta say, after living there 25 years, i'm not aware of any exclusive "black" parts.

maybe you haven't been looking, but the very north end and the very south end would qualify

If you are interested in, give Danny, Board of Trustees, a call at 908 635-2037 (cell) a call.
By the way, I have no bad feeling about Newark and am member of Newark Museum, and visited often, as a matter of fact. And I deliver sleeping bags to homeless people in Newark at nights, so Newark is like 5th and 6th Av of NYC to me at nights, you got many homeless sleeping outdoors, outside churches ...etc.

Thanks so much for the info!!! And I will definitely give Danny a call!!!
Thanks again!!

Well do tell there if my perception was wrong? I am an open minded individual and am trying to give this lady the benefit of the doubt --- but I can relate somewhat to what the poster stated by appearance. Please dispel any myths here--- thanks!

like any place, there are areas that are better than others. however, with the exception of a few blocks (ave. c between 17th and 25th) there's nowhere I wouldn't consider living. there are apartment buildings scattered throughout the city, but that doesn't automatically make it a "black area" or "dangerous" (like Newark!). You'll have a building with some black people, but other ethnicities right across the street.
the nicest part of the city is downtown (below 8th street), or right around Hudson County Park (Blvd to Avenue B, 34th to 40th st).

I am not looking for any arguments, I stand by my opinion and the OP concurred that there was an awkwardness about the place.
sometimes you're too close to the forest to see the trees.
Have a nice day

I always think you can get a fairly good idea of the ethnicity in a town by checking out the schools. Check out the following link where you can view ethnicity in Bayonne schools: Greatschools.net Search: bayonne
When I looked at the statistics I have to say that I was actually surprised that Bayonne seems to be as diverse as it is. I always heard that Bayonne was predominantly Italian...and not very accepting of others...but perhaps that is not the case and/or it has changed.

Good info!!! Thanks!!!
I am really disappointed in the prospective landlord in this area. I will NOT judge the entire city based on her behavior and the school ratios do show some diversity. Maybe the segregation was the old way and a new way is taking over Bayonne. Thanks all for the info-- and I will continue my search -- where I dunno!!!

I'm sorry-- I missed your post before ! You would think they would!! My hubby's program only guaranteed us housing for two years!! This predicament is an inconvenient and strange one for a family!! I have to move / switch schools etc. in the middle of the program!!
We attempted to sublet from a future resident coming in--- but it fell through.
