Jersey City to Staten Island?
Do any of you commute from Jersey City to the Outerbridge area of Staten Island? I am curious to know how long it takes on average and what the commute is like.

The Light Rail to Staten Island form Bayonne is a good 8 years away, for now you can take a Bus to 22nd Street and Transfer to the Hudson Bergen Light Rail , soon in a few weeks to months the New Terminal will open up @ 8th Street , it will include a Bus Terminal so, it will be easier to Transfer form a Staten Island Bus.

I used to take Rt. 1/9 to 440 back in the days by car. Took about 25 minutes (off peak/weekends). I dont think public transportation is available.

My older son was offered a job in Staten Island & is seriously thinking about working there. We live in Jersey City. Using public transportation now in year 2012, how would he get from Jersey City to Staten Island? I've googled and all, but cannot find anything that helps. I hope someone can help me here. Thank you all in advance.

There's a NYC MTA bus (Route S89) that runs from Staten Island to the 34th Street light rail station in Bayonne. I'm sure your son could take the light rail from JC to 34th Street Bayonne, transfer to the S89 Bus to Staten Island. Depending on where in Staten Island your son's job is, he'll likely have to transfer to another bus somewhere on the island. With all of the transfers, this will be a very long commute, despite the relatively short distance. It would be done much more quickly and easily by car.
Here's MTA's Staten Island bus map: http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/bussi.pdf
Alternatively, if the job is in the St. Georges area of SI, it would probably be faster to take PATH or ferry from JC to lower Manhattan and then the SI Ferry to St. Georges.

Uh, no. The S89 stops at 34th Street, not 22nd Street or 8th Street. And I know this was posted before 8th Street opened, but I heard nothing about any bus terminal (and even if there was, there's nothing wrong with the transfer at 34th Street. You take that overpass over the train tracks, go down a flight of steps, and the bus stops right there)

During rush hour, he could take the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to 34th Street for the S89 bus (the schedule is here: http://mta.info/nyct/bus/schedule/staten/s089cur.pdf)
It would probably be reverse-peak, so it makes it especially important that he try and time himself for a specific bus, to avoid waiting another 30 minutes. (This is actually a pretty new bus route. It started up September 4th, 2007)
If he's traveling outside of rush hour, the best way would be to take the PATH to the World Trade Center, and walk or take the subway down to South Ferry, and then take the ferry to another bus or the Staten Island Railway (SIR).
There are also express buses, but service is sparse reverse-peak. The X1 goes down to the South Shore, and serves Hylan Blvd and Richmond Avenue, and the X10 goes towards the North Shore, around the SIE. There is also the X17 bus that starts later in the day (the first bus gets to Lower Manhattan around 11:00AM)
Here are all the SI bus schedules (both express and local): mta.info | Staten Island Bus Schedules
I live in SI and know the transit system here like the back of my hand, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask (either by DM or just posting them up here)

Thank you so much for your response. You have been very helpful. I will print out the schedule for my son and he can make an informed decision on whether the job he was offered is worth the commute for him or not. Thanks again for your time. I really appreciate it.

I just realized. You said the area around the Outerbridge. To get there, he'd have to transfer from the S89 to the S55, S59, S74, S78 (or the Staten Island Railway) depending on where exactly the job is.
If you don't mind, could you give us the nearest major intersection where he'd be working (say, Hylan Blvd/Page Avenue for instance)? Or at least the neighborhood so we could help plan the trip easier.
