My wife and I just went through this. We were looking for a midwife to support us in a VBAC, preferably a homebirth. We did find out that it is not legal for a midwife to attend a VBAC at home (just a NJ thing, I believe). We wound up finding a midwife in PA that was willing to assist us. The best advice I got was to contact homebirth midwives in neighboring states and see if they will come into NJ. You are pretty close to NY so I'd call there. The only thing to keep in mind is that the midwife probably can't accompany you to the hospital should you need to transfer. I still get upset when I think about my wife's hospital birth so that is certainly a chance we are willing to take.
There was also a practice at Morristown Hospital - the Avalon midwives - that were recommended to us for VBAC. You might want to search out my old thread. There were some helpful posts with resources. One of the good posts got cut but maybe the poster will see this and post again or DM you.
