Impressions of Vineland, NJ
What is the general character of Vineland, NJ? Is it young, old, wealthy, poor, safe, or seedy? What is the dominant industry? Where can I find the best apartments near or in Vineland, NJ?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

flying scarf...hmmm Vineland can be ALL the things you mentioned depending on where you look. I am not a big fan of the town as the bad is never far away. Why are you looking there?

Hi Taboo, I will be interviewing at a freight company in Vineland, NJ and am interested in learning more about the area and if I would want to settle there. Ideally, I would like an area which offers numerous corporate financial opportunities and where I needn't be concerned about someone breaking into my apartment.

Flying scarf:
I was born and raised in Vineland and left 19 years ago. My family still lives there, unfortunate for them. If you are talking about National Freight I grew up with the owners. Vineland was a very nice old Italian town. Times have changed. The prisons that they have brought to Cumberland County and surrounding area has destroyed what was a great place to live. Cumberland County is one of the poorest in NJ and the crime rate is almost up to Camden NJ. Forget the apartment living, I cant think of one that is safe. East Vineland is a better area but the crime is reaching there too. It is very sad to go home and visit. Look in other areas to live. Stay out of Cumberland County.

You would do not want to live in center city Vineland. I lived there for 16 yrs. First chance I got to move from there I did it. I was robbed so many times the last few years I lived there that I lost count. I owned my home. I have moved to Salem County right outside Cumberland County . I bike in my yard here will still be there in the morning. In Vineland everything had to be locked up or by by in a matter of hours. They even tried to take my dog from our fenced in yard.
A lot of National Freight employees live in Salem County or East Vineland.
Vineland has been rated one of the hightest crime rates and the school ranks at the bottom. Check out the local newspaper The Daily Journal - www.thedailyjournal.com - Vineland, N.J.

Vineland is a great place to live
I'm appalled at some of the above comments! I have lived in Vineland for 10 years and moved here from large metropolitan cities. We live in East Vineland where there is plenty of space and beautiful neighborhoods. My children have grown up here and have had a wonderful education and have made many friends. If you live in this area you are only 30 minutes from beautiful shore towns and only 45 minutes from Philadelphia where, of course, there are great restaurants, museums, and ample sports activity (National Hockey, Baseball, Football and Basketball). The one great thing about Vineland is that you can be so close to these areas but not have to absorb the standard of living. In most areas of Vineland, sales tax is only 3.5% and home prices start around $225,00 in a very nice neighborhood.
People are very FRIENDLY also!
Don't listen to the hype -- I'm not sure where these people are living!
Good Luck!

I agree with mom4, i to grew up in Vineland and hated it. Even as a child i knew that town was no good and could not wait to move away. When i go back to visit all i see is a sad town. I don't no if the crime has gotten better or worse but there was a lot of crime when i was young and i'm not suprised at the things i read in the paper nowadays there. With the exception of East Vineland, if you live in East Vineland than you probably have a nice house and decent job.
I think Vineland has the potential to be a great city, but somehow it just can't seem to attract good businesses. And now i hear they're building a new walmart there, BAD MOVE. Walmart is going to make Vineland even poorer and shutdown all the mom pop stores that make a good community.

I think Vineland is a great place to live if you originally came from an urban area. I was born and raised in Philadelphia. Family moved to Vineland when I was 14. As far as the crime in center city and surrounding areas, name a place any where in NJ where drugs haven't taken their toll on society. It is not the city that is bad, it is unfortunately a small group of people. These types of people are everywhere you go on this planet. The hopeless, drug addicted, lazy thieves prey on anybody who's an easy mark. I live very close to center city, I have never been the victim of a robbery. My Family who live in other areas of Vineland have never had their homes broken into. There are still some great neighborhoods where people take pride in their community. Then of course there are areas where the person behind the counter at Wawa is covered with gang tattoos. You may be at Wal-Mart and an employee starts shouting some brutally violent rap lyrics. You may be at Denny's eating amongst killers, drug dealers, and working class normal people. This is South Jersey.
I think if you can hold your head up and look people in the eye, you'll be fine in Vineland. It is no place for the timid.

In all honesty Vineland sucks if you are looking for alot of things to do. It is honestly a great suburban town though. Yes, unfortunately the center city area has been allowed to decay but It has recently received a state grant that has allowed them to begin rehabbing the downtown area. Currently, a redevelopment program on the corners of East and Landis (center city) is bringing up-scale town homes and an off-broadway theater. Yes there is also a new Wal-Mart being built but it has the distinction of being the Largest in the NATION, not to mention the fact that Wal-Mart inc. fought for 2+ years with the local legal system to make sure they got that store there...that should tell you something about Vineland's location on the map and the local economy. If you are looking to buy a house however Vineland is not the place to buy in the current economy. Currently home sales are down all over Cumberland county, espescially Vineland because the Real-estate agents here are under the impression that Cumberland bears the distinction of being the only county in the state where home prices continue to rise...this means that unless you are willing to pay market value or slightly below you will not get a good deal and will set your self up for a hard road to travel if for some reason you need to re-locate. As for apartments to live in the best places in town to go to are: Cumberland Green Apartments, Harlen Court and Oak Valley. All are middle to upper class communities with low-no crime and are in prime locations which include access to major roads and higways. All are within 5 mins of the Cumberland Mall which is the City's major shopping venue where they are currently building a Burlington Coat Factory and all ready sport a Best Buy, JC Penny, Boscov's, Kmart, Circuit City, another Wal-Mart, 3 grocery stores, Ashley furniture, Target, Petsmart, Staples, Dicks, and many good restaurants as well as 2 Starbucks. If you would like to know anything else you can contact me by looking up my webpage: Medical Billing, Medical Office Management-RLR Consulting-Contact Us. My business is located here in Vineland, NJ.

I wouldn't necessarily be looking for an apartment to rent in downtown Vineland, but rather something outside of town. The area as a whole is quite livable. Elmer and Franklinville are decent as is east of town. There's shopping in the area, you have a state park nearby, there's a drive in.
A couple of months ago I went down to Wheaton Glass and Millville historic district. I drove through Vineland to get there and lived. Go figure.
