If you use it, pay for it simple as that.
Indeed. And if you use highways, there should be tolls on all of them as well. User fees. Fares are user fees for transit riders. Tolls and gas tax are user fees for automobiles.

Why should the driving public have to subsidize trains any more than transit users subsidize "free" highways and cheap gas?

Well , it looks like NJT will need to find a Private investor to build the Union-Essex-Passaic-Bergen-Hudson County networks which would serve a estimated 500,000 people. It would involve using abandoned Freight lines that run through those areas. And would consist of 14 lines , 12 Electric , 2 Diesel.

Thats what he wants you to beleave , but its not. Although the Executive should take another 30k form his absurd pay check. And be a proper boss and care about his employees. I guess Christie doesn't care about the wasteful spending at the top.
Unfortunately the system is not self sustaining, we contribute over $200MM to keep it going. 10% of the deficit would be wiped out if it were self sustaining.

Instead of placing more tolls anywhere just pay at the pump. much more equitable, cheaper, easier to implement, efficient, etc just like CT did years ago.

They are in the process of selling there old fleet off to Montreal , LA , New Mexico , Utah , Mexico , Toronto. About 50 locos and cars. And they are buying new Hybrid Buses and energy efficient diesels. Our old Electric Loco are being replaced with New German Locos that can last longer and go faster (130mph) and NJT has purchased Dual Locos , so that when the ARC Tunnel is completed , diesel lines can use the tunnel aswell. New Dual Locos should arrive by early next year and the last one should be here by 2012. NJT is leading the Nation in Railway upkeep. Even Amtrak is looking at our new Fleet for there Replacement fleet. The New Dual locos will go 100mph on diesel and 130mph on Electric. NJT is cutting operation costs, there trying very hard to. And due to the recent recession everybody suffered , but raising fares isn't the way to go, the roads are already maxed out. Our Transportation Trust is going to run out next year , thus it would wise to raise the gas tax to cover it.

What amazes me is we are 12 billion in the hole. The love is going to go around. It looks like the property rebates are gone also. Everyone has to suck it up. If our past governors(both parties) took some steps this wouldn't have been too bad. But they put bandaids on deep cuts and nothing worked so he has to slash and towns and schools have to also. We all we be affected whether it's tuiton, rails, roads, property taxes and so on and so on. Or we can kick the can down the road like it's being done on the national level and let some other poor slob pay for it.

Again, why is Christie protecting motorists? If everybody has to share the pain, why aren't motorists?
There are alot of local bus routes being cut, ironically in areas that probably voted heavily for Christie.
Eliminated are the 970, 971, 978, 979, 981, 305, 986, 884, 980, 811, 822, 833, 835, MCM1, MCM2, MCM3, MCM4, MCM5, MCM7, 966, 967, 973, 722, 742, 772 (Sat service cancelled), 423, 891, 890

Come on John do you think someone sits down to see if an area is repub or dem before they cut the bus lines. And to play devils advocate they raised the tolls on the parkway and turnpike last year and they are scheduled to rise again next year. So some pain is going around, maybe not enough for transit riders. You'll see the same argument when they eliminate the property tax rebate.

A fare increase is not a doomsday scenario, taking away the subsidy would be. As another poster pointed out those of us who do not use mass transit are paying for those who do. How is that fair?

Ummm an increase in the fuel tax would increase the cost of mass transit so NJ transit would have to increase fares or we would have to provide a greater subsidy.

Again how is it fair that those who do not use mass transit have to pay for it. You don't use my car but you should make part of my payments. Sound fair?
