We're looking at property in Montague. Wondering if anyone who lives there can share info on what it's like. Where's the best place to do grocery shopping? Best nearby hospital? Doctor? Vet? What are the people like?
Are the schools decent? Thanks!

Joe Moving is right about not alot going on there. I live in the next town over (Sandyston). As far as food shopping there is a Shop Rite in Montague right off of Route 23. My guess is everything else you would most likely cross over into PA (like Matamoras) or Newton NJ. As far as the schools I can't speak of the quality. I do believe though that Elementary would go to Montague Elementary and the High School kids would go to Port Jervis NY. Being that you mentioned you were looking into schools I'm assuming that you either have kids or plan on having them. The one thing I would look at is NJSP.org and go under the Megans Law section. I was suprised to see how many sex offenders are in Montague. It's not as bad as other areas, but something to think about.

It's a quiet, rustic, hilly, but spread-out township. Part of it's Federal land, along the Delaware River.

At Tri-State mall, off route 23 N, there's ShopRite, TJ Maxx, GNC, a liquor store, Dollar store, pizzeria. Plenty of gas stations near the mall, at least 6 within sight of each other.

Take 84E right outside Port Jervis, for the Crystal Run Galleria Mall in Middletown, exit 4E, about 45 mins away, which includes a cinema. Over in Matamoras there's a Wal-Mart Superstore, then in a seperate mall there's a KMart with other small stores. In Milford, right across the Milford-Montague bridge (206 ends there, turns into Route 6), there's Grand Union. Nearby hospitals: Bon Secours in Port Jervis, about 15 mins. to the north; Newton Hospital in Newton, going south, on 206, about 45 mins. (all depending on traffic).

Trainline: Port Jervis line, aka Bergen/Main Line begins and ends in Port Jervis, goes to the Secaucus Transfer where you can transfer to NYC Penn station, or continue on to Hoboken.

FYI: There's no public transportation within Montague, or within the county. There's Lakeland commuter bus that leaves from Newton, goes to Port Authority; also NJ Transit bus in Stockholm, also goes to Port Authority

Don't know much about the schools, but M & K's right, re where the kids go.

There's a vet off 206 South; right hand side; also one on Clove Road.

Whatever your decision - good luck

Default You Want to Live in Montague NJ?

When people say, "...Not much going on there..." it's an understatement...

If you work in an artistic/creative field, you'll discover Montague lacks inspiration in a very big way.

No sidewalks -- if you are somebody who enjoys walking for exercise, you need to drive out of Montague to take a walk. Unless you want to drive to Manhattan or Philadelphia, most walking areas nearby are sort of one-main street towns. Those "main" streets get boring fast, any walking beyond them leaves you looking at not too much. However, town walking beats walking in the woods where you might meet a coyote or a bear.

No infrastructure whatsoever -- you're sunk if you're not big on driving. Not too much to drive to if you do drive so maybe stay home.

Basically, I'd rank in as the next to the last place in the world a "creative/city oriented person" would want to live for more than a couple of minutes. It does, however, have a slight edge over living in prison; very slight.
