I lived in a "decent" 700sqft 1 bedroom in Elizabeth ($800/mo) with a brand new car ($400/month/lease) Plus - electric, gas, cable, internet, cell(no house phone), creditcard, Health ins, 401k, Car ins, food(inlcuding the odd chinees food or pizza delivery) and I still had a couple hundred left over every month. I think i was making around 30k at the time but my gf and I were home bodies. When we did go out, sometimes she would pay, sometimes I would.

If I didnt have the brand new car and full coverage insurance I would have had even more left over.

If your talking young kids you always have the situation of like 10 people living in a two bed condo to give the impression that 20 somethings can live there. I used to know a coworker of mine who was so stuck up and snobby and she was always yapping on about how my townhome was on Park ave, ny and how the stores were like and what she used to shop for clothes. I finally found out from another coworker she was sharing the townhome with like 6 roomates. So in your case how many roomates are you planning to have?
I am guessing that with this sort of question about this area, there's a good chance that the OP will be have a lot of room mates, perhaps accompanied with sheets on the windows in lieu of curtains.

Did you live with your gf and did she split the rent? If she did well there goes your couple hundred a month.

From my experience in NJ, I would estimate around 25,000. However, it depends on the area because North Jersey is the most expensive.

This is happening across the USA. NJ is no exception........
