No plane needed to go from NJ to NY..not that far away some places are only 5 minutes away...depends on where you are in NJ and where you want to go in NY.

If you will be visiting in early August, be sure to check out the state fair in Augusta.
Visit Cape May for the beautiful, old Victorian-style homes, and visit Wildwood for the best boardwalk experience.
Camden has a terrific aquarium, but if you go, stay safe, crime in Camden is very bad.
I personally think the Warren county area is a really beautiful area to go for a drive.
Lambertville has great shopping; or, if you like flea markets (people selling used things) I would go to Englishtown on the weekend. It's huge...if you go, look for a stand that sells a variety of delicious, homemade pickles.
If you go to New York City (and you really should), just take the train in for the day; it's convenient, cheap and safe.
Have fun!

I would just throw in that you should also take the opportunity to head over to Philadelphia for the day and tour the sites there. If you can only pick one, definitely take NYC, but if you have the time, check out Philadelphia.
