To clear things up regarding North Avenue....

North Avenue is a few miles long. When you exit the Turnpike at 13A, you end up on North Avenue. If you drive about two miles (crossing over Rt 1&9) you'll end up in the North Elizabeth area of Elizabeth, near the North Elizabeth Train station and Stop & Shop grocery store - North Avenue & Newark Avenue.

I'm a recent graduate who will be starting law school this fall and I've been living in North Elizabeth for the past 18 months. I grew up in a nearby town (Hillside). There are a lot of cities and towns better than it, but I would have to say that North Elizabeth is one of the better areas of Elizabeth. It's close to the train station, and with two commuter bus lines stopping at North Ave & North Broad St, the commute to New York City is not that bad - about 30 minutes.

There are a lot of people in this area that have been living here for years, and there is a small Jewish community that live in the highrises on North Ave & North Broad (there's about two or three synagogues with in a 5-10 minute walk). You can see the families walking about on Saturdays. There are also a lot of New York City commuters that live in the area.

Overall, North Elizabeth is an ok place to live. It's definitely convenient location-wise, if you need the train. The rents are decent and I don't have a problem with running to Stop and Shop late in the evening if I forgot something for dinner. The closer you are to North Avenue, the better. The closer you get to Fairmount Avenue, the more things get a bit more "grimy."

With all that said, my boyfriend and I are looking to move around the end of the summer before I start law school. One downfall of North Elizabeth is that outside of houses and apartments, there is not much else here. We are now looking at towns that have walkable downtown areas like Montclair or Cranford/Westfield.

Hope I could be of some help.

Roselle Park is definitely a step up from Elizabeth.

Roselle Park is right next to Elizabeth.. it's is quieter.. Elizabeth is more urban than any of it's surrounding towns.. Elmora and North Elizabeth are very safe.. you should go and see for yourself.. I lived in Elizabeth for awhile.. I like it b/c it is very convenient to commute into NYC.. oh and it's more affordable than any other town.. if you buy property, the taxes are also lower..

sure.. I'm very familiar with both areas.. I have a house on North Ave and my parents live on Elmora..
the intersection of Fairmount and Pennsylvania is very convenient to the train station but you want to stick on North Ave. Fairmount area is not that clean.. there is a firestation on the corner and is very active, somewhat noisy.. North Ave have many stores and bus 112 runs on it to NYC, very convenient to commute (25 mins). North Ave between Newark Ave and 1&9 is a family oriented neighborhood, a very diverse neighborhood but you'll see the Portuguese/Brazilian influence.. very good portuguese restaurants.. nice coffee shop on the corner of Jackson Ave and North Ave.. many NYC commuters

Elmora and West Jersey.. this area is safe too, many restaurants and coffee shops on Elmora.. safe at nights, you'll see from Jewish, Polish, Hispanics, Irish, Indians, Portuguese, etc.. on this neighborhood.. you can eat out late at nights, most restaurants are open til about 11pm, there is an excellent coffee shop on the corner of Elmora and Jersey ave.. it opens at 5am and closes at 11pm.. this area is also walking distance to Warinanco Park, many joggers on the streets.. it's about 10 minute walk to the train station.. many NYC commuters..

so I looked at a few apartments on west jersey st and I have to admit I didn't see too much wrong with it. In fact it seemed like a pretty nice area. I didn't get a chance to look at the walk the train station but I can't see it being much different. West jersey ave seemed pretty safe to me. The prices for the apts were through the ceiling though.

yea I read those, but I guess these things are subjective. I also particularly liked the apartment at newark ave and fairmount-looks like a nice safe walk to the north elizabeth train station.
