Callahan's used a Sabrett's beef/pork dog -- at least that's what I was always told and read.

I always liked River View East in Elmwood Park. Great french fries & cool place to eat at. Hot Grill in Clifton isn't bad. Johnny & Hanges hot dogs way to pale & not so great.

What are people's thoughts on the Hot Dog Caboose in Midland Park?

Jumping in late here... but I read through all the posts...

I'm a die-hard Callahan's fan as well.... very disappointed with them closing.

With that said NOTHING beats the ACTUAL DOG at Rutts Hutt.... Forget about the place, service, etc. It's a quick hot dog joint, you aren't there to sit down with a family and eat a meal... I mean half the time you end up taking the dog outside and eating by your car, no?

You are there for the BEST ACTUAL HOT DOG. I'm not a relish fan but their relish is good. I however, eat mine with just mustard... but to each their own. If you want ketchup, who cares? The guy serving you gives you a dirty look for using ketchup? WHO CARES! This is NJ.... people give dirty looks for everything... no big deal here...

I'm a fan of Hot Grill in Clifton and think Johnny & Hanges is overrated.... I think their onions are way too potent on their texas weiners but it's a nice chill atsmophere and WAY more laid back than going to Hot Grill which is usually a hustle & bustle type of place...

+1 for Hirams as well... Great dogs here...

Jimmy Jim's in Garfield USED TO BE a great Texas Weiner/lunch spot... Unfortunately the business was sold and is now under new ownership and it is NO GOOD!!! So bad that I actually didn't finish my hot dog as it seemed undercooked...

Love Hot Grill hot dogs. Always stopped there with my family after bowling at Bowl-o-Mat in Paterson for a couple dogs, all the way... I slept like a baby - that was then - I'd be up all night now, if I had fries and chili sauce late at night...

Callahan's using Sabrett dogs? don't know about that...I was told they were Schickhaus, no matter.
they were certainly great...What kind does Rutt's use?

the best is Chris's Red Hots outside of Branch Brook Park on Heller Parkway. Near the border of Newark/Belleville/Bloomfield.

gus - I can't find it on google maps, I do see heller parkway going through branchbrook park which is only a few blocks long... But I don't see the place listed and it doens't come up in the search.

Maybe I will just drive over there....

What do you recommend there?
