There's a federal law that allows people an out on union membership. However, the availability of lawyers tips the scales for many. There was a news story on the Philly news a few years back where yet another crackpot parent in South Jersey was filing a lawsuit against a teacher because her little bundle of joy took a bible to school when the kids were asked to bring in a book from home to read to the class. The teacher did not (& could not) allow the kid to read from it, but offered the kid substitute reading material.

Just go along with the flow, huh? Don't speak up for right and against wrong? Allow a chunk of your pay to go to political candidates?
Bob in accounting probably "overpaid" because he does a better job than you. Here's a novel idea: "merit pay"!
You just proved my point. Unions need to be outlawed.

As it was mentioned by other people in this thread, the legal issues alone make the Union worth it. But I do agree with you about the political candidates.

I would hope he's a better accountant, because I'm not one I think you missed my point.

You are correct. I was mis-informed. I believe you have to pay dues regardless of if you in the union or not. And that may vary by state.

How is that remotely constitutional?

You pay a token fee annually, because the federal government recognizes that you are benefitting by the presence of the union, because the employer can not pay you a lower wage or give you lesser benefits. What the token fee is can vary. Yes, I worked in a closed shop (not as a teacher) in Philly when this law was passed & one of the employees decided to do it & was quite ticked off that he had to pay the taken fee, by federal law.

Do you make over 400K a year or are you just protecting an imaginary fortune you might make one day?

That is kind of wierd logic. So if I am not directly affected by something , no matter how unfair, I should not comment on it? Oh and by the way it applies to people making $1MM.
Ok now that we have dispensed with that silliness it has been proven again and again that wealth has left the state. There is no reason to chase out more of the people who pay most of the taxes.
