Hello,

The in-laws are coming to town and they absolutely love linguica sausage. I want to purchase(take-home) some fresh linguica in Ironbound so can anyone recommend me the best market there to purchase it? My in-laws used to live in the Bay area which has the highest concentration of Portuguese in the nation and now live in Texas. We want to surprise them. It'll gain me more brownie points, lol.

They used to regularly shop at a place in San Leandro, CA which was the best but the owner murdered some meat inspectors. This was a big story, I saw a documentary on A&E last week.

CNN - Local News - Police seek reason for triple slaying - June 23, 2000

Anyways, any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks,

You sure there aren't more Portuguese in Boston/Cape Cod/Fall River/New Bedford/Providence as opposed to the Bay Area? I think New England has California beat by a lot.........

I'm not 100% sure, I just heard that they Bay Area had more Portuguese but i'm sure you're correct. I'm finally going tomorrow, would it be an OK/safe walk from Newark Penn Station?

Thanks,

Thanks,
i'm almost certain that lucario is correct about the southeastern MA/RI area having the highest concentration of portuguese in the nation.

to answer your question, walking from newark penn station to lopes won't be a problem at all. just stick to this walking route, which keeps you on the busy commercial stretch of ferry street most of the way. it should take about 12-15 minutes, depending on pedestrian traffic and how fast you walk.

and btw, i also recommend lopes sausage. i think they supply their meat to various restaurants around the ironbound, but are also very popular with local residents as well as out-of-towners wanting sausage for home-cooked meals.

while you're in newark, i highly recommend stopping by nasto's olde world desserts, which has some of the best italian ices in the tri-state area. the best flavors by far are lemon (which has actual lemon peels mixed in) and cantaloupe. the place is open until 6:45 (closed sundays) and is about a 5 minute walk southwest of lopes sausage.
