How is Union City NJ? Is it a good town to live? What are the pros and cons of living there? I know somebody that lives there and I woud like to know what you folks think about that town.
Congested
Some people think its filthy although its average Urban area grit and grim to me
If you have children i wouldn't move here
some crime , but not alot compared to other nearby cities
A bit noisy , or at least the spots ive been
Pros
Cheap apartments and condos
Cheap / Fast access to Jersey City & Manhattan
Multiple Transit options
3% sales tax
Very Close to NYC like i said
Somewhat diverse town , mainly Latino / Caribbean
Shopping Selection isn't that bad
Middle / Low Class , harding working people

This sums it up pretty much to a T. The only thing I disagree with is it is IMHO quite a bit dirtier than just a bit of grit and grime

This sums it up.
Plus, knowing Spanish is a plus, you won't hear much English on the streets.
I live nearby and walk through UC all the time. It's depressingly ugly. Few back yards - all are used for parking. Homes packed tight. Few trees or gardens. Cheap construction, even the older buildings aren't pretty. It would be a dreary place for kids to grow up in, plus the schools are bad. (Check GreatSchools.com - they rate 4 on student tests.)
Plus it's true about the Spanish. You're actually surprised when you hear English on the streets or in stores.
The cheap shopping is handy but sometimes you need quality stuff too and you probably won't find it there.
I would recommend it to adventurous young people who work in NYC and just need a cheap place to sleep, or artists who need cheap space.
Bad public school district and it's lot more urban gritty environment. Think of not great areas of Bronx, NY. Why is that area not great to raise family? Bad public school district and gritty urban environment.
It's a very blue collar and condensed town (10K + per square mile). Lots of traffic too. Not very good schools either and an above average crime rate.
If you have thick skin, I think it would be a decent place if you're a single professional (not very expensive) or commuting student but not the type of area I'd want to raise a family in.
Union city is pretty big. Are you looking into a specific part? Where does your friend live?
I pretty much agree with what has been said.... gritty, congested, lots of "SHADY" areas. I am married with a 2 yr old.... I would NOT move there.
I grew up in the town over... West New York if you'd like you can PM me and I will give you what ever info you'd like. I don't want to trash UC because I do realize people live there and I do not wish to offend anyone, but if you have kids I would prob look elsewhere.
