I just moved to Montclair from San Diego and I have been amazed at the condition of the road ways. I have NEVER EVER driven over so many cracked, pot-holed, and distorted roadways in my life! WTF does the toll money and taxes go to anyway! Beyond that the GPS can barely keep up with the lane swapping and quick exits many of which have no signage. I can never tell what route I am half the time because there are no signs!

easily the most confusing and dangerous roads I have ever driven and I am from Long Island!

New Jersey roads may be a little crazy, but the Pennsylvania Turnpike is even WORSE!! When it snows, the roads authority people put TOO MUCH salt on the road! I've never had a problem like that with NJ roads. I wouldn't knock NJ roads until you traveled on the road I just mentioned. Just saying.

*Sorry, I had to get off topic for just a moment.

California roads are MUCH better than NJ roads. Out there you have rush hour traffic moving at 65mph because highways out there have all those lanes. Out here you have bottlenecks and standstills. None of those freeways as they call them have tolls either do they?

I could believe that. I was on Rt 1 in Fairless Hills about two weeks ago and that road was concrete. I saw all these drivers around me wondering how their tires don't get chewed up.

The other guy came from San Diego though. Having been to California, New Jersey is light years behind in terms of road quality.

Not entirely true. Orange County CA has four toll roads, I think, and part of one (Rt 91) is optional, in the sense you can pay a 5 dollar toll in exchange for driving in a less crowded lane. At least it was like that the last time I drove on it.

San Diego = No toll roads. There used to be a toll bridge going into Coronado Island, but it was eliminated.

You do know how many potholes are formed right? It's partly because of the fluctuation of the temperatures overnight and such. There's a little more of that in NJ than in Southern California...

Yeah that little thing sounds kinda kewl with the option thing. I wasn't in San Diego or Orange County actually, just Los Angeles. And the roads there didn't have any tolls, 405, 410, 510, 101 etc. 101 I think was the oldest, and the only one with fewer than four lanes each way.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. There shouldn't be any toll roads for those who don't want to pay for them. The better way to do it is to increase the state gas tax and confer the roads over to state maintenance, or better yet, re-designate the GSP and AC Expressway as Interstate highways and let the feds maintain them. The mindset of New Jersey motorists pre-supposes the inevitability of toll roads, and that's a shame.

I don't want to pay tolls, so I take 35 instead of the parkway and 295 instead of the tkpe.

don't tell me you want to socialize the the turnpike and parkway?! raise the gas tax on everyone to alleviate the pain of a few??!? I never thought of you as a socialist mike!

But that doesn't always work, does it? Try taking 295 from Swedesboro to Teaneck without paying a toll or encountering a red light or intersection at grade. If you are driving North-South in New Jersey, it becomes very impractical to avoid tolls if you are going to make time.
